Chapter 8

Chapter 8

“Oppa!”

The moment the door opened, Go Hyeon-a, whose nose had turned bright red from the cold, threw herself into Hyeon-jun’s arms.

“Has it been six months?”

“Yeah! Have you been doing well?”

“I have. Can’t you tell just by looking at me? I’m completely different now, right?”

Hyeon-a stepped back and examined him.

The last time she had seen him, he had looked extremely exhausted.

Now he looked completely different.

“Did you find a good job or something? You look way healthier. And... did you get bigger too?”

“Hehe. I’ll explain all that later. Come inside first.”

Hyeon-a casually kicked off her shoes and rushed into the apartment.

Hyeon-jun picked up her luggage and closed the door behind them.

“Wooooow!”

Hyeon-a let out an amazed cry.

And understandably so.

During the past five years, this was the first time they had lived in a place this clean, organized, and fully furnished.

“Wow! There’s another room?!”

Two rooms were separated by sliding doors.

Hyeon-a opened one and couldn’t stop exclaiming.

“What do you think? This is your room. Nice, right?”

“Of course it is!”

Hyeon-a jumped onto the bed and rolled around excitedly.

Hyeon-jun watched with a warm smile.

How long has it been since I’ve seen her this happy?

He had spent quite a bit of money renting the apartment and buying furniture.

Yet not a single won felt wasted.

“Rest for a little. Let’s go out for dinner later.”

“Okay. But, Oppa.”

“What?”

Hyeon-a sat up and stared directly at him.

For some reason, her eyes looked moist.

“What’s wrong? Did something bad happen?”

“No... it’s not that...”

Her emotions seemed to suddenly surge.

Hyeon-a wiped at her eyes.

Hyeon-jun became flustered.

While he stood there not knowing what to do, she finally spoke.

“I’m always comfortably studying while you’re out working so hard. I feel guilty about that...”

Hyeon-jun secretly sighed in relief.

He had worried something had happened at school.

Thankfully, that wasn’t it.

“You think about the strangest things. It isn’t hard at all.”

“Liar. You pushed yourself because I was coming home. I told you the basement apartment was really fine...”

Seeing his worried younger sister, Hyeon-jun couldn’t simply laugh it off.

He had always hoped the burden of being the family breadwinner wouldn’t weigh on her too.

That was why he worked harder.

Why he had lived so stubbornly.

But it seemed Hyeon-a had been carrying her own burden too.

I should clear this up.

He needed to explain that he wasn’t pushing himself.

And that she wouldn’t need to worry so much from now on.

“Should we eat dinner outside?”

“No, it’s fine. I’m full.”

Grrrr.

Hyeon-a awkwardly rubbed her stomach.

“If you don’t want to go out, we can order delivery. It’s okay to spend some money on a day like this.”

“Then... fried chicken?”

“Only fried chicken? Order anything you want.”

By that point, Hyeon-a also realized something was strange.

Even if today is special, Oppa would never normally say something like that.

Wasn’t he the kind of person who tried to save every possible won?

Thinking about it, his appearance was strange too.

He looked healthier than before.

Far from someone who had overworked himself.

Part of her was relieved.

Another part wanted to know why.

“Oppa, are you doing different work these days?”

Hyeon-jun nodded.

Before he could say anything, Hyeon-a grabbed his hand.

“Y-You didn’t join some criminal organization, did you?”

“Do I look like someone who would do that?”

“No... but the situation is weird...”

Hyeon-jun had to admit she had a point.

His spending had suddenly increased.

From Hyeon-a’s perspective, that must have looked suspicious.

“I started Hunter work again.”

“...What?”

Hyeon-a’s expression immediately stiffened.

She had opposed his Hunter work in the past too.

She had said that with his Trait, going into hunting grounds would only get him hurt.

Hyeon-jun hurriedly continued.

“Should we order first? Delivery might take a while.”

“...Don’t try to dodge the subject. Explain everything properly. Got it?”

“You wouldn’t let me avoid it anyway.”

“Of course not!”

Hyeon-jun ordered several dishes through a delivery app.

Hyeon-a stared holes through him the entire time.

The moment he finished, she asked again.

“You said Hunter work wasn’t efficient for you. So why are you suddenly making money from it?”

“I gained a new ability. It feels almost like I awakened again...”

Hyeon-jun told his younger sister everything.

There was no better way to completely reassure her.

“Is something like that even possible?”

“At least, there’s never been a reported case before. So I guess I’m the first.”

“Hmm...”

Hyeon-a narrowed her eyes.

She really was suspicious of everything.

“Believe me or don’t. I don’t lie to you.”

“What’s the new ability?”

“Hmm.”

Instead of explaining Copy, it seemed faster and easier to simply show her how much stronger he had become.

Hyeon-jun looked around, then opened a drawer.

Inside was a toolbox.

He took out several long nails.

“Watch this.”

Hyeon-jun held multiple nails in one hand and squeezed.

When he opened his hand again, the bent nails had been crushed together into a single twisted lump of metal.

“!”

Hyeon-a’s eyes widened like a startled rabbit.

A smile appeared on Hyeon-jun’s lips.

“What do you think? You know one Strength Rune wouldn’t let me do something like this, right?”

“I-Is it really true? You really got a new ability?”

“I told you. That’s why Hunter work has been paying pretty well lately.”

Hyeon-jun took out his smartphone and showed her the purchase messages he had received from the Exchange.

Hyeon-a scrolled through them with trembling fingers.

“Y-You really earned all of this money?”

“Yeah. And I’m barely even struggling for it.”

“What do you mean you’re not struggling? You’re making this much because you’re doing dangerous things.”

“Come on. Don’t you know your Oppa? Safety always comes first for me.”

“...You say that so shamelessly.”

Hyeon-a didn’t completely believe him.

But she couldn’t exactly oppose his Hunter work either.

Oppa must have already made his own decision.

She couldn’t take that decision away from him.

There was only one thing she could do.

Support him.

“If you’re tired, rest. And never push yourself too far. Promise me that.”

“Hunter work actually gives me more time to rest than before.”

“That’s a relief.”

The food arrived soon afterward.

They set everything on the table and started eating.

Hyeon-a ate happily, as though she had never been worried in the first place.

Considering she had originally suggested ordering only fried chicken, her appetite was impressive.

Hyeon-jun watched her with a satisfied smile.

This is why I earn money.

From now on, he wanted to buy her much more delicious food.

He wanted her to wear better clothes.

He wanted to build a life where even failing an exam wouldn’t feel like the end of the world.

[Enough power has accumulated within the <Primordial Soul Circuit>.]

[The grade of <Primordial Soul Circuit> is changing. <F> ▶ <E>]

“Done.”

A full month had passed since his reawakening.

Several days had already passed since the beginning of the new year.

Today, at last, his Soul Circuit reached E-rank.

There were no flashy lights or dramatic effects.

But Hyeon-jun could clearly feel that the quality of the power flowing through his body had changed.

“Status Window.”

[Name: Go Hyeon-jun]

[Trait: Primordial Eye]

[Primordial Soul Circuit <E>]

Stats ▽

-Strength: 1/100

-Agility: 1/100

-Vitality: 1/100

-Mana: 1/100

-Willpower: 1/100

Skills ▽

<Trait Skill>

-Copy

<General Skills>

His Stats had returned to one.

The numbers themselves were lower, but the power flowing through his body felt far heavier.

“So this is E-rank power.”

Even a single Stat point carried a completely different weight from before.

What would happen if he raised them all to 100 again?

At that point, wouldn’t he become a monster that truly surpassed ordinary humans?

“...Maybe that’s exaggerating it.”

Hyeon-jun checked the skill.

[Copy]

-You can copy a designated object. Copied objects are automatically removed after 24 hours and may be manually removed earlier if desired.

-Maximum Copy Grade: E-rank or lower.

-Daily Copies Remaining: 11/11.

“Whew. Thank goodness. I worried for nothing.”

He had been afraid the Copy grade restriction might remain stuck at F-rank.

Fortunately, the skill had evolved alongside his Trait.

The maximum grade had risen to E-rank.

And the number of daily copies had increased by one.

“I should test it immediately.”

Hyeon-jun left home and ran to the Exchange.

He intended to buy an E-rank Agility Rune.

Its current price was two million won each.

He had bought an F-rank Agility Rune for 270,000 won.

The E-rank version cost almost eight times more.

Damn expensive.

The other Runes were similarly priced.

Going from E-rank to D-rank would require nearly one billion won with simple calculations.

No wonder the number of Hunters drops sharply starting at D-rank.

It made him appreciate once again how fortunate he was that the ability from his reawakening was Copy.

The value of the skill became even more obvious now that he had reached E-rank.

Well, that’s good and all. The only disappointing thing is that I didn’t get a new skill.

Usually, when a Soul Circuit increased in grade, a new Trait Skill appeared.

Hyeon-jun had secretly been looking forward to it.

But his Skill list remained exactly the same.

Maybe asking for more when I already have Copy is just greedy.

While thinking about that in the waiting area, his turn arrived.

Hyeon-jun approached the counter, purchased an E-rank Agility Rune, and left.

He currently had two Copy uses remaining.

He had already absorbed his original Mana Rune after copying it, leaving one use remaining from his old total.

Then the newly added daily use gave him another.

Gulp.

In a secluded place, Hyeon-jun immediately copied and absorbed the Rune.

His Agility became three.

“Good. Let’s go right away.”

Hyeon-jun returned home, gathered his equipment, and headed straight to his next destination.

It was a field considered the most difficult among F-rank hunting grounds.

The Mountain Field.

He had visited several different fields recently.

But he had never entered the Mountain Field.

Today, he intended to test the strength of E-rank.

“This is your first time here, right?”

The employee at the Gate management post asked.

“Yes. Is there a problem?”

Normally, employees simply let Hunters through.

This was the first time someone had asked him something like that.

“Watch out for the Field Boss. The one here is particularly violent.”

“Ah. Yes. Understood.”

Field Bosses, also called Named Monsters.

They were the strongest creatures within hunting grounds.

They were much more difficult than ordinary monsters.

However, their rewards were valuable enough that many Hunters of the same rank deliberately hunted them.

“I’m not saying it just as a formality. Seriously, be careful. The number of people who enter and don’t return for three days or longer has increased recently.”

“Whoa...”

“They could simply be missing, but personally I think the Field Boss got them.”

The government didn’t launch a national search simply because someone disappeared inside a Gate.

That was written directly into the Hunter pledge signed by every Hunter.

So even the employee didn’t know whether the missing Hunters were alive or dead.

“If you happen to find any bodies, please bring back their IDs. And be careful.”

Leaving the employee behind, Hyeon-jun stepped through the Gate.

The scenery changed in an instant.

He went from a city filled with roads, cars, and buildings...

To a lush natural environment.

“It’s warm.”

Hyeon-jun looked around.

The Gate was located in the middle of a forest.

Probably for convenience, all the trees near the Gate had been cut down.

Cushions had even been placed on the remaining tree stumps.

Apparently, they were used like benches.

“Looks peaceful.”

Bright daylight.

Warm weather.

If not for the monsters visible here and there, it would have been a nice place for forest bathing.

The atmosphere seemed completely different from the employee’s grim warning.

“A Field Boss, huh?”

The Mountain Field’s Field Boss.

A bear monster known as the Green-Mane Tyrant.

Its materials sold for roughly seven to eight hundred thousand won.

Far more than ordinary monsters.

“Should I look for it?”

Hyeon-jun thought carefully, then decided to wait.

“I should hunt some normal monsters first.”

Becoming E-rank didn’t mean he should immediately charge at the Field Boss.

First, he needed to fight the regular monsters of the Mountain Field, the strongest F-rank hunting ground, and determine their level.

“Hopefully I can fill my bag again today.”

Hyeon-jun took out his weapons and secured them at his waist.

One kitchen knife.

One iron hammer.

Those were his beloved weapons.

“Let’s see.”

The first creature that entered his sight was a pig monster whose head and body were covered in hard stones like armor.

Its official name was Stone Boar.

Hunters simply called it Stone Pig.

“Snort.”

The monster noticed Hyeon-jun and approached while snorting aggressively.

Hyeon-jun drew the kitchen knife from his waist.

The sharply honed blade gleamed beneath the sunlight filtering through the trees.

“SNORT!”

The Stone Boar kicked off the ground and charged.

Hyeon-jun’s eyes widened slightly.

Its movements seemed incredibly slow.

Whoosh!

Hyeon-jun lightly twisted his body and easily avoided the charge.

I could have dodged this even when I was F-rank. But it feels completely different.

At F-rank, he would have needed to throw his entire body out of the way.

Now, he was certain he could dodge simply by shifting slightly.

That difference produced a very clear result.

“SNORT!”

The second charge came.

Hyeon-jun once again shifted his body slightly.

At the same time, he thrust his kitchen knife.

Stab!

Between one piece of stone and another.

The knife pierced precisely through the gap in its armor.

It was an attack he wouldn’t even have attempted without the difference in rank.

“Squeeak...”

Blood poured from the Stone Boar’s neck.

The monster staggered.

Then collapsed.

“Ha.”

Hyeon-jun stared in disbelief.

Hunting had become this easy from just one rank increase?
