Chapter 103

Chapter 103. Cookie, Run! (3)

“Dmitriiiiiii!”

Caesar screamed in horror at the sight.

Yukgap, who had accidentally crushed one of Caesar’s kin underfoot, immediately panicked and apologized.

“S-Sorry. I didn’t know he was there.”

Caesar hurriedly jumped down from his palanquin and ran to the cookie Yukgap had stepped on.

The cookie had already been crushed so badly that it was difficult to make out its original shape.

White tears streamed from Caesar’s eyes as he lifted his fallen kin.

“Dmitri! Wake up! Please!”

“Ugh...”

The cookie called Dmitri let out a faint groan.

Then his head dropped limply.

He no longer moved.

Apparently, he had died.

“Look, I’m sorry.”

Yukgap had not meant to do it, but he had ended up killing one of the cookies.

He hurriedly apologized again.

Caesar suddenly whipped his head around while holding Dmitri’s corpse.

Then he screamed,

“You cookie-murdering monster!”

“You brutally killed Dmitri, one of my people!”

“I will never forgive you!”

“I told you it was an accident!”

Yukgap instinctively protested.

Caesar ignored him.

Instead, he shouted at the other cookies.

“Hear the command of Caesar, great leader of all cookies!”

“Eliminate the cruel cookie-murderer who killed our comrade Dmitri!”

The surrounding cookies shouted in unison.

“Eliminate him!”

“Eliminate him!”

A tiny cannon cobbled together from laboratory equipment was rolled in front of Yukgap.

The cookies quickly loaded it and aimed the barrel at him.

“Fire!”

The moment the command was given, there was a tiny firecracker-like pop.

A small pellet arced through the air and struck Yukgap.

He tilted his head as he looked at the crystals lightly stinging his skin.

“This is... salt?”

The cannonballs the cookies were firing were nothing more than ordinary chunks of salt.

When their weapon proved ineffective, Caesar pointed dramatically into the air.

“Bomb him!”

Something quickly rose overhead.

Tiny airplanes made from flasks.

They swooped toward Yukgap and began dumping boiling milk over him.

“Aaagh! That’s hot!”

Yukgap recoiled as the scalding milk poured over him.

But it was nowhere near enough to actually injure him.

The cookies quickly reported the failure.

“It’s not working!”

Caesar immediately gave another order.

“Pour on more boiling milk!”

“Melt him alive!”

More tiny aircraft carrying steaming milk came flying in.

Yukgap clenched his teeth and swung his arm.

“You little...!”

His arm moved faster than the speed of sound.

The resulting pressure wave alone knocked the cookie aircraft out of balance and sent every one of them crashing down.

One of the cookies hurriedly reported,

“The aerial unit has been destroyed!”

“Our current weapons appear insufficient against that cookie-murderer!”

Caesar went silent for a moment at the disastrous report.

Then he ordered his forces,

“Everyone, gather!”

“We’re going into close combat!”

The moment he finished speaking, the surrounding cookies screamed and charged Yukgap in a swarm.

Their tiny eyes burned with furious determination.

“Cookies united are strong!”

“Glory to sugar!”

“Attaaaaaack!”

They rushed him from every direction.

Some rammed their hard heads into Yukgap’s legs.

Others beat at him with their tiny hands.

Of course, they were still just cookies, so their attacks caused virtually no damage.

Yukgap could only stare at the absurd situation in disbelief.

“How many times do I have to tell you it was an accident?!”

Then several cookies with rubber bands tied around their waists used the tension to launch themselves into the air.

They pulled out toothpicks and struck Yukgap hard in the back of the neck.

“We’ll take you down!”

A faint sting brushed across his skin.

But there was no chance such an attack could defeat Yukgap.

“You think scratching my neck is going to kill me?!”

He shook his body.

The cookies clinging to him were thrown off.

Their durability was literally that of well-baked cookies, so many of them broke in half just from hitting the floor.

Caesar watched his kin crumble one after another and screamed in fury.

“Kill as many as you want!”

“I have plenty of ingredients to make more!”

Yukgap stared at him.

“You were furious because one of your people died five minutes ago.”

“Do you really get to say that now?”

Caesar showed no sign of backing down.

“We will never retreat!”

“We will fight until only one cookie remains!”

Yukgap looked at him with pity.

“You seem to be missing something important.”

“You can’t keep fighting me much longer.”

“Do not underestimate my fighting spirit!”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Yukgap clicked his tongue.

“How many days has it been since you were baked?”

“So what?”

Caesar looked confused.

Yukgap sighed.

“Restaurant Shelley only uses organic flour with no preservatives.”

“Do you seriously not understand what that means?”

Only then did Caesar realize something crucial.

“D-Don’t tell me...”

His body was made from preservative-free organic flour.

He had been sitting at room temperature for several days.

The restaurant was also relatively humid.

Yukgap coldly pointed out the inevitable conclusion.

“You’re already going stale.”

It was only natural.

No matter how intelligent or alive he might be, Caesar was still food.

After sitting at room temperature for days, something was bound to happen.

“That’s impossible!”

“I am Caesar!”

“The great leader of all cookies!”

“The first cookie to possess reason and self-awareness!”

Caesar completely lost his composure and refused to accept reality.

Yukgap answered sarcastically,

“So what?”

“You’re still going to grow mold and spoil soon.”

“No! That can’t be... Ghk!”

At that moment, a toothpick violently pierced Caesar through the chest.

Caught completely off guard, Caesar dropped to his knees.

Another cookie stood beside him, gripping the toothpick with a grave expression.

Caesar recognized him and gasped.

“What are you doing, Brutus?!”

The cookie called Brutus kept the toothpick aimed at Caesar’s chest.

“We have no need for a leader who has begun to spoil.”

“A new era requires fresh cookies that will not rot.”

“Brutus... even you?!”

With those words, Caesar collapsed.

Brutus planted a foot on him and raised the toothpick high.

“From this moment on, I will write a new history of sugar!”

The surrounding cookies erupted in cheers.

They did not seem to care that their creator and former leader had fallen.

They were simply delighted to have a new ruler.

In a way, they were impressively disloyal cookies.

“Ugh...”

Caesar lay on the floor, groaning after being stabbed in the back by Brutus.

Perhaps because of the impact, a deep crack had formed across his chest.

Yukgap began to feel strangely sorry for him.

This whole situation had started because of Yukgap’s accidental step, after all.

“You okay?”

Caesar forced his slowly crumbling body upright and laughed faintly.

“Hehehe...”

“To think the cookies I created would stab me in the back.”

“What an ironic ending.”

Emptiness and bitterness mixed across his face.

“Everything is meaningless in the end.”

“Since I was made from preservative-free organic flour, this fate was probably unavoidable anyway.”

Caesar staggered forward.

Brutus raised his toothpick again.

“What is this?”

“Old ruler, do you still have strength left to move?”

Caesar gritted his teeth.

“Do not underestimate my cookie power.”

“I was the first living cookie created through alchemy!”

“You are all nothing more than things shaped by my hands!”

Even as he spoke, the crack running through his body widened.

His words sounded powerful, but he was clearly staying upright through sheer will.

“Then we’ll settle this once and for all!”

Brutus approached with his toothpick raised.

Caesar panted heavily.

“Brutus, there is one thing you overlooked.”

“I am the cookie who created every one of you.”

“And that means...”

“I can destroy every one of you too!”

With those words, Caesar suddenly threw himself toward a corner of the restaurant.

A small remote control was lying there.

Caesar activated it immediately.

Thick white mist began pouring into the restaurant from every direction.

Screams erupted everywhere.

“Aaaaaah! My body is melting!”

“Save me! Save me! We’re breaking apart!”

“Run! Aaaaaah!”

Panic spread through the cookie army.

The moment the mist touched them, their bodies cracked apart or collapsed into fragments.

Brutus realized Caesar had done something and demanded,

“What did you do?!”

Caesar laughed darkly.

“Our bodies require gluten to maintain their structure.”

“I created and hid an enzyme that breaks down gluten.”

“Any cookie that touches this mist will crumble immediately.”

Exactly as he said, the cookies exposed to the fog-like spray broke apart one after another.

Amid the chaos, Brutus stared at Caesar in horror.

“When did you prepare something like this?”

“I am the first cookie.”

“Did you really think I wouldn’t anticipate something like this?”

“I only hoped I would never have to use it.”

Apparently, Caesar had secretly prepared enough gluten-degrading enzyme to wipe out his entire race in case something went wrong.

Brutus looked down at his own body as it began to crumble under the mist.

“No!”

“The new era was right in front of me!”

Caesar laughed sharply.

“Then I’ll see you in hell!”

“If cookies even have a hell to fall into!”

“Hahahahahahaha!”

A final crack tore across Caesar’s body.

Then he collapsed into powder.

Only his last laughter continued echoing through the restaurant.

“Uh...”

Yukgap, who had unwillingly witnessed the entire thing, was left speechless.

The dramatic political struggle among the cookies was one thing.

But now the entire restaurant was covered in cookie crumbs and enzymes.

He stared blankly at the disaster around him.

Then he muttered weakly,

“How am I supposed to explain this to Victoria?”
