Chapter 113

Chapter 113. A Trap Within a Trap (2)

“Ugh!”

No. 11 groaned as he stared at the flames surging before him.

Seeing him finally show weakness, Victoria grinned openly.

“I heard you’re weak not only to disinfectants, but to fire too.”

“If flames touch you, the bacteria making up your body all die!”

Having his weakness exploited so directly seemed to wound No. 11’s pride.

He shouted furiously,

“You stupid blonde! How dare you do this to a member of the new humanity!”

He focused his mind and scattered the bacteria making up his body in every direction.

They were his weapons and his army, too tiny to see or even sense.

The bacteria quickly entered Victoria’s body through her respiratory tract.

“Ghk!”

Hit directly by the lethal bacteria, Victoria coughed up blood and dropped to one knee.

No. 11 chuckled as he watched.

“I’ll crush every organ in your body and kill you!”

At such close range, Victoria had taken his biological attack head-on.

Soon, her immune system would collapse.

Her nervous system and respiratory system would shut down.

All that remained was to watch her writhe in agony as her organs failed and she died.

No. 11 waited eagerly for Victoria to scream in the face of death.

But what came from her mouth was the exact opposite of what he expected.

“...That’s it?”

Victoria spat out the blood pooled in her mouth and stood back up.

No writhing.

No screaming.

She looked far too healthy.

No. 11 froze in shock.

“Th-That’s impossible!”

Ever since becoming a chimera fused with bacteria, he had carried out biological attacks countless times.

Each time, he had watched enormous numbers of people die.

But never once had someone simply dusted themselves off and stood back up as though nothing had happened.

Victoria seemed to read his thoughts.

“Don’t you remember?”

“Every time you released your bacteria, someone kept making vaccines and spreading them.”

“How do you think those vaccines were made?”

Victoria pointed at her own neck.

“It was me.”

“I used the stupidly simple method of injecting your bacteria directly into my own body and making antibodies.”

“Thanks to that, I’ve built resistance to the bacteria you create.”

“And this time is no exception.”

“That can’t be!”

No. 11 could barely speak.

“M-My bacteria can’t be this powerless...!”

He could not believe what he was seeing.

There was no way.

His bacteria.

The power that had let him reign like a god and claim tens of thousands of lives.

And now it had been stopped by a single woman.

“Robert!”

Victoria seized the opportunity.

“Exterminate that filthy lump of bacteria!”

Robert’s eyes lit up as his body hummed.

[Sterilization mode engaged!]

With a series of mechanical clicks, steak sauce and flames began firing alternately from Robert’s body.

Either one was deadly to No. 11.

“Aaaaaagh! Get away from me!”

No. 11 lost his composure and screamed as he sprayed bacteria toward Robert.

Victoria snorted.

“Idiot!”

“You think a bacterial attack is going to work on Robert?”

A biological attack might be deadly against a creature made of flesh and blood.

But Robert was an inorganic golem created through alchemy.

Bacteria could do nothing to him.

“No.”

“No, this can’t be happening.”

“This wasn’t in Alpha’s prophecy.”

“Something went wrong.”

“Yes... that has to be it.”

“This wasn’t supposed to happen according to Alpha’s prophecy...!”

Faced with an opponent who perfectly countered him, No. 11 turned deathly pale and began trembling.

The smug, relaxed attitude he normally carried had vanished completely.

Like a madman, he kept muttering about Alpha’s prophecy over and over again.

“What have you been babbling about this whole time?”

Victoria snapped.

“Shut up and get sterilized!”

“Aaaaaagh!”

As the attacks grew fiercer, No. 11 finally lost all composure and screamed.

He tried waddling away on his bad leg, but he was far too slow.

“Robert!”

Victoria pointed at him.

“Don’t hold back against that disgusting fat bastard!”

“Clean him out until there isn’t a single bacterium left!”

[Eliminate! Eliminate!]

Victoria and Robert pressed him relentlessly.

No. 11 was caught almost immediately.

Stunned, he could do little more than awkwardly swing the cane he always carried.

“D-Don’t come any closer!”

Compared to the confidence with which he had launched his bacterial attack moments earlier, his resistance was pathetic.

“Fatty.”

Victoria slowly closed the distance, glaring at him.

“It’s time you paid for what you’ve done.”

Back in Gangwon Province, she had been forced to helplessly watch people die even though they might have been saved.

She had seen countless reports of people suffering and dying from the mysterious epidemic.

And the one responsible for all of it was standing right in front of her.

That single thought made her vision go white with all the anger she had accumulated.

BEEEEEEEEEP!

At that moment, a piercing noise exploded through the area.

A massive vibration followed.

Sensing danger, Robert immediately spread his arms and wrapped Victoria in them.

[Protect the Doctor!]

A tremendous shock wave struck.

Robert and Victoria were hurled away together.

They violently rolled across the ground.

“Ugh... that hurts.”

Victoria groaned and struggled upright.

Then she saw Robert.

His body had been crushed so badly that it was difficult to recognize his original shape.

Victoria cried out sharply,

“Robert! Are you okay?”

[Seventy percent critical loss of internal components detected.]

[Continued operation deemed impossible...]

With those words, Robert’s lights went out.

He had taken the attack directly without even having his protective outer shell.

Apparently, he could no longer function.

“It was fortunate I didn’t go too far.”

A fluttering sound followed.

No. 8 landed nearby.

He aimed his overtechnology weapon, the Noise Gun, at Victoria.

“I hope you understand.”

“I couldn’t simply stand by and watch another Archon be defeated.”

“Blood?”

Yukgap, who had been blindly following the path to the right, suddenly flinched at the scent drifting through the air.

Judging by how strong it was, an enormous amount of blood had been exposed nearby.

And he knew that scent.

“No way...”

Yukgap hurried toward it.

There, No. 5 stood with her beast form manifested and her upper body raised.

Beneath her lay a mangled lump of flesh so badly destroyed that its original shape was impossible to recognize.

The smell of blood Yukgap had noticed was clearly coming from that mass.

“You’re here.”

No. 5 sensed his presence and spoke indifferently.

Yukgap stared at the lump of flesh with a trembling expression.

“That’s No. 7, isn’t it?”

There was no doubt.

Even though her shape had been destroyed beyond recognition, the scent of blood coming from it was unmistakably hers.

“Yes.”

No. 5 admitted it without hesitation.

Apparently, after their earlier encounter, No. 5 had reduced her to this state.

“...”

Yukgap could not speak.

The sight was horrifying.

No. 7 had always been so confident.

So strong.

So vicious.

He had never imagined seeing her like this.

“Surprised?”

No. 5 asked, apparently reading his thoughts.

Yukgap answered in a shaky voice,

“I’ve never seen No. 7 get beaten this badly before.”

“It was nothing special.”

“I simply used my nanomachines to disassemble most of her body.”

“She isn’t dead.”

“She’ll recover soon.”

If there was one thing Archons had been designed for, it was tenacious life force.

In theory, as long as their vital organs, especially the brain and heart, were not destroyed, they could regenerate almost indefinitely.

Even now, the lump of flesh was rapidly reconstructing organs and a recognizable form.

At this rate, she would probably recover within an hour.

“If she had fled the moment my blood got on her hand, it wouldn’t have gone this far.”

No. 5 recalled what had happened.

“When my blood carrying the nanomachines touched her hand, she didn’t run.”

“She got angry and kept attacking me.”

“She ended up covering herself in even more of my blood.”

“And that ‘punishment’ led to this.”

Then No. 5 held out a key toward Yukgap.

“But I got the key.”

It was the same key No. 7 had shown him earlier while challenging him to take it from her.

“What do we do from here?”

They had somehow obtained the key, but what came next was unclear.

Kevin’s voice came through their earpieces.

[I’ll roll the die.]

[We’ll proceed one at a time.]

Yukgap and No. 5 nodded immediately.

“Fine.”

“I’ll follow it.”

Soon, Kevin gave them the result.

[No. 5, you got ‘Wait.’]

[Yukgap, you got ‘Fight.’]

Yukgap snatched the key from No. 5.

“Looks like I’m going alone from here.”

“You stay here and rest.”

No. 5 asked with concern,

“Can you handle it alone?”

“Well, I’ll figure something out.”

It was an incredibly casual answer.

No. 5 gave a faint laugh.

“You have no plan.”

Yukgap agreed.

“I never had one.”

“Not when I deserted Abraxas.”

“And not now.”

He glanced at No. 7, still reduced to a lump of flesh.

“Still... she’s going to be furious once she recovers.”

Apparently, he was worried about that.

No. 5 answered as though it were nothing.

“That doesn’t matter.”

“If necessary, I’ll ‘punish’ her again.”

“Archons were designed around compatibility relationships in the first place.”

“Compatibility?”

Yukgap looked at her.

“What are you talking about?”

“It’s a long story.”

No. 5 brushed it aside.

Yukgap did not ask further.

“Anyway, rest up.”

“I’ll be back soon.”

With those words, Yukgap vanished in a yellow afterimage.

No. 5 silently watched him disappear.

Then she looked down at No. 7 lying beside her and asked casually,

“No. 7.”

“What exactly do you like so much about a man like that that you keep chasing him around?”

Of course, no answer came.
