Chapter 127

Chapter 127. Christmas Eve Run (2)

“And now, let me introduce the Rudolph who’ll be handling our presents today!”

At Victoria’s confident introduction, Robert rolled in with a series of beeps.

Several pieces of rebar shaped like reindeer antlers had been attached to his head.

[System online. Ready to deliver gifts to immature fleshbag units.]

Robert’s eyes gleamed ominously as his mechanical voice beeped.

Nova stared at him in horror.

“The kids are going to have nightmares!”

“What a terrible thing to say! Look! His nose even lights up.”

The moment Victoria finished speaking, a red bulb near Robert’s nose lit up brightly.

Apparently, that was enough to qualify him as Rudolph.

“And the presents are ready too! I made every single one with love!”

Victoria pointed toward a mountain of gift boxes piled in the corner of the restaurant.

They were Christmas presents she had spent several sleepless days and nights making.

Nova stared at them suspiciously, then quietly asked Yukgap,

“Didn’t they say a business had already donated money for presents?”

“Victoria said Santa couldn’t give the kids mass-produced goods, so she made everything herself.”

Yukgap answered with the expression of a man who had given up on life.

Nova nearly jumped.

“You should have stopped her!”

“If that were possible, I would have done it already.”

Yukgap looked exhausted.

Nova did not know exactly what had happened over the past few days, but apparently he had spent them trying everything he could to stop Victoria.

And failed every time.

“Look!”

Victoria happily showed them letters written by the children at the orphanage.

“These are the letters they wrote to Santa.”

“They wrote messages for Santa and the presents they want.”

“Aren’t they adorable?”

“I used every bit of my alchemy to make presents just for these children!”

“They’re going to love them!”

Victoria kept smiling as she showed off the letters.

Yukgap leaned toward Nova and whispered,

“At least I secretly removed all the explosive materials whenever I saw them.”

“There shouldn’t be any serious accidents.”

“That’s a relief.”

Whatever else happened, they absolutely could not give dangerous objects to children.

Completely unaware of what they were whispering about, Victoria raised her voice excitedly.

“All right!”

“Today is Christmas Eve!”

“The children are waiting!”

“Let’s go!”

Just as they were about to leave the restaurant, a cold wind suddenly blew in from the distance.

At the same time, something sparkling began drifting across Yukgap’s vision.

He looked up.

“Huh?”

“What is it?”

Victoria, already prepared to leave, turned toward him.

Yukgap glanced at the sky.

“It’s snowing.”

“A lot.”

“Directoooor!”

Several children came running over at the sound of their own excited voices.

The orphanage director, who had been decorating the Christmas tree, smiled warmly.

“What is it?”

“Santa Claus really is coming today, right?”

The children looked up at her with anticipation.

They held this event every Christmas season, but the children still asked the same question every year.

And it was understandable.

For these children, Christmas was the one day when they could receive presents and truly feel like they were celebrating a special occasion.

Of course they would wait for it desperately.

“Of course.”

“You wrote your letters last time, didn’t you?”

“I’m sure Santa will come with your presents.”

“Really?”

The children smiled brightly.

“Hehe.”

Do they really like it that much?

The director smiled to herself and checked the time.

“Let’s see... they should be here soon.”

It was about time for the volunteers to arrive.

Then she noticed the sky outside.

Snow was falling so heavily that it was becoming difficult to see ahead.

“Oh my.”

“When did the weather get this bad?”

The sky looked as though a hole had opened in it.

Almost as if responding to her question, the weather forecast came from the radio.

[...A heavy snow warning has now been issued nationwide.]

[Snowfall exceeding thirty centimeters is expected, and significant traffic congestion is likely.]

[We ask all citizens to exercise extreme caution.]

[Unable to move. Unable to move. Unable to move...]

Robert’s wheels spun uselessly on the snow-covered road.

Yukgap was pushing him with all his strength from behind.

He shouted irritably,

“Put some more effort into it, scrap metal!”

[I am already trying.]

[My wheels cannot gain traction.]

Robert beeped back in complaint.

Turning into a truck and loading himself with presents for the children had gone well enough.

The problem was the sudden blizzard that had begun the moment they left.

Snow covered the area in an instant.

Now they were completely stranded in the middle of the road.

“It’s no use.”

Nova was also pushing Robert while shivering from the cold.

“The snow on the road is too deep.”

It was still falling so heavily that they could barely see ahead.

Everyone had gotten out and pushed with all their strength, but it was not enough.

“Robert!”

Victoria finally shouted.

“Use the flamethrower!”

“Melt all the snow off the road!”

A flamethrower emerged from Robert’s body.

[Receive the baptism of fireeeee!]

With a dramatic shout, crimson flames surged forward.

But only for a moment.

The blizzard riding the wind swallowed the flames almost immediately.

Even the snow touched by the fire only melted in a small area.

Nova muttered hopelessly,

“The snow is accumulating faster than the flames can melt it.”

“And the wind is blowing against us.”

“There’s no way the flamethrower can clear the whole road.”

“What do we do?”

Victoria looked up at the sky with resentment.

“The children are waiting.”

More than anything else, the thought of the orphanage children waiting only for her made her anxious.

“Victoria.”

Yukgap, still pushing Robert from behind, asked,

“How far is it from here to the orphanage?”

Victoria estimated the distance.

“Only a few kilometers.”

“If we turn left at that road ahead and keep going straight, we’ll reach it.”

“That’s not far.”

Yukgap looked out at the raging blizzard.

Victoria tilted her head, unable to understand what he was thinking.

“What are you planning?”

“At this point, we don’t have a choice.”

Yukgap narrowed his eyes at the snow filling his vision.

“I’ll make us a road.”

Victoria looked confused.

“How?”

“With snow falling this fast, making a road is impossible.”

“No matter how fast the snow falls...”

Yukgap calmly replied,

“Is it faster than sound?”

He reached up and removed the red light attached to Robert’s face.

Then he tied it around his own forehead.

“On that note, I’m borrowing this, scrap metal.”

[What are you planning, fleshbag?]

“Stop talking.”

“Just follow the road I make.”

Yukgap lowered his body into a running stance.

A low growl escaped his throat.

“Grrrrrrrr...!”

His skeletal frame swelled.

The form of an Archon began emerging.

Bones and muscles bulged.

Spotted patterns appeared across his skin.

His mouth pushed forward, and sharp fangs emerged.

Then Yukgap launched himself forward.

“GRAAAAAAAH!”

A tremendous roar shook the area.

Fortunately, the blizzard had paralyzed the roads, so there was no one nearby.

That meant he did not have to worry about being seen.

Yukgap pushed his speed to the limit.

The scenery around him began to melt and stretch into a single distorted mass.

The world only visible when he entered the realm of absolute speed.

At the same time, the air colliding with his body erupted into massive sonic booms.

The shockwaves swept the snow away in every direction.

“W-What is that?”

Nova stared in shock as a long path suddenly appeared through the snow with a deafening crack of torn air.

She had clearly seen Yukgap disappear into the blizzard.

But after that, all she could see was a red light racing back and forth through the storm.

It was moving so quickly that it left long red trails hanging in the air.

And every time it passed, a massive gap opened through the snow.

“Yukgap is running back and forth between here and the orphanage at the speed of sound.”

Victoria immediately understood what he was doing.

By repeatedly racing over the same route at supersonic speed, Yukgap was not giving the snow enough time to settle.

At the same time, the naturally generated sonic booms became powerful shockwaves that blasted the snow to both sides.

It was an absurdly brute-force solution.

“Is that even possible?”

Nova asked in disbelief.

Victoria nodded without hesitation.

“If it’s Yukgap, yes.”

Maybe no ordinary being could do it.

But Yukgap had been perfected using Abraxas technology.

For him, it was possible.

Victoria hurriedly climbed back into Robert and pressed the accelerator as hard as she could.

“No time to waste!”

“We have to follow Yukgap’s road before the snow piles up again!”

Robert, loaded with presents, began moving forward.

Thanks to Yukgap repeatedly packing down and clearing the path ahead, the truck moved far more easily than before.

Nova sat in the passenger seat and stared at the red trail racing through the dark road.

She murmured in awe,

“The fastest Rudolph in the world.”

“Director, when is Santa coming?”

The children gathered in the orphanage yard looked increasingly tired of waiting.

The time Santa was supposed to arrive had already passed by quite a while.

Their complaints were slowly growing louder.

The director did her best to reassure them.

“Just wait a little longer.”

“He’ll be here soon.”

She said it confidently, but she was just as worried.

She stared at the snow falling without pause.

“Did the snow stop them from coming?”

She had heard on the news that the roads had been paralyzed by the sudden blizzard.

Perhaps the volunteers who were supposed to come today were stuck somewhere in traffic because of the snow.

What should I do if that’s true?

More than anything else, she worried about the children who had spent all day waiting for Santa Claus.

The thought that they might be disappointed made her sigh.
