Chapter 126

Chapter 126. Christmas Eve Run (1)

[This week’s episode of A Restaurant Like This Exists?! will not air due to circumstances at the broadcasting station. We ask for our viewers’ kind understanding.]

“So it really isn’t airing.”

Victoria, who had been sitting in front of the television just in case, sighed in disappointment.

Yukgap could only stare at her in disbelief.

“It’s impressive that you actually thought the episode might air after everything that happened.”

“But this was our chance to introduce Restaurant Shelley to the whole country.”

Victoria still seemed deeply regretful about the failed shoot.

“No matter how I think about it, it’s such a waste.”

“Then you shouldn’t have gone out of control.”

“I was just trying to help the children at the orphanage.”

Victoria answered weakly.

Just then, the restaurant door opened and Nova walked in.

“I’m here.”

Victoria replied halfheartedly.

“Welcome, Nova.”

Nova immediately noticed that Victoria was unusually listless.

“What’s wrong with Victoria?”

“She’s upset because she lost her chance to be on television.”

“Well, there’s no way they could air what happened.”

Considering the chaos they had caused, it would have been stranger if the episode had made it onto television.

Nova nodded in understanding.

Victoria spoke to her in a dejected voice.

“Nova, you still worked hard, so I’ll pay you generously for the part-time job.”

Nova shook her head.

“No need.”

“Just give the money to the orphanage director we met back then.”

Victoria looked surprised.

“Really?”

“You’re okay with that?”

“In a way, she was one of the biggest victims of the whole thing.”

“We were originally supposed to make cupcakes and donate them to the orphanage, but that fell through.”

“She must have been disappointed.”

According to the original plan, they would make inexpensive cupcakes and donate them to the orphanage.

The orphanage would get affordable cake for the children.

Restaurant Shelley would get a heartwarming scene.

The broadcasting station would get useful footage.

It had been a perfect arrangement for everyone.

Until the unprecedented disaster of endlessly multiplying cupcakes ruined everything.

“Wait.”

Yukgap spoke up.

“We still have all the ingredients at the restaurant.”

Victoria’s eyes immediately lit up.

“Really?”

Apparently, she had come up with an idea.

Nova suddenly felt uneasy.

“What are you planning this time?”

Victoria answered confidently,

“Even if the television appearance failed, we can still donate the cupcakes.”

“After all, Restaurant Shelley’s management philosophy is love and peace.”

Fortunately, this time her idea did not sound dangerous.

Nova relaxed slightly.

“Then I’ll help too.”

“I also feel responsible for failing to stop you last time.”

“Really?”

“Making cupcakes isn’t difficult.”

Nova had already been feeling guilty about not stopping Victoria during the shoot.

More importantly, there was always the possibility Victoria might do something bizarre while “making cupcakes.”

For the children’s sake, Nova had to prevent that.

“By the way, how did that broadcasting station even find Restaurant Shelley?”

Yukgap asked while preparing ingredients.

Victoria casually began putting on her cooking clothes.

“That?”

“Apparently some sponsor recommended us.”

“That sponsor has unusual tastes.”

“Of all the restaurants out there, they picked Restaurant Shelley.”

Yukgap spoke as though it were nothing.

Victoria immediately bristled.

“What’s wrong with my restaurant?!”

“You seriously have to ask?”

It looked like the two were about to start bickering again.

Nova quickly stopped them.

“Enough fighting.”

“The children are waiting.”

“Let’s just make the cupcakes.”

“I’ll have to decline.”

The orphanage director smiled gently and shook her head.

Victoria had brought plenty of cupcakes and stared at her in shock.

“Why?”

“These are normal cupcakes this time!”

“They don’t multiply or anything!”

“I appreciate the thought, but another business donated cake after what happened last time.”

“The children ate as much cake as they wanted.”

“They’re so tired of it now that they don’t even want to look at cake anymore.”

“Well... I guess that’s a good thing.”

Victoria trailed off weakly.

She had put a great deal of effort into preparing cupcakes for the children.

Now that the gesture was unnecessary, she looked genuinely disappointed.

Understanding the situation, Nova cautiously asked,

“Is there anything else we can help with?”

“We really are sorry about what happened last time.”

The director thought for a moment before asking,

“Hmm... then could you perhaps help us distribute Christmas presents?”

“Christmas presents?”

“Christmas is coming soon.”

“Every year, we recruit volunteers to give presents to the children.”

“We even dress up as Santa Claus.”

“The presents themselves are already prepared.”

“The business that donated the cake also sent money for us to buy gifts.”

Apparently, the orphanage was looking for volunteers to spend a warm Christmas with the children.

The moment she heard that, Victoria’s eyes sparkled.

She shot one arm into the air.

“That sounds wonderful!”

“Of course we should help with something meaningful like that!”

Yukgap was less enthusiastic.

“Victoria, can we really manage it by ourselves?”

“Why not?”

“That’s not what I mean.”

Yukgap looked concerned.

“Santa Claus is a man.”

“An old man, too.”

“Don’t tell me you expect me to play Santa.”

Santa Claus was, after all, supposed to be a round-bellied elderly man.

And there was no one around Yukgap who really fit the role.

“Don’t worry.”

Victoria answered confidently, as if she had been waiting for the question.

“I’m going to be Santa Claus.”

“You?”

Victoria as Santa Claus.

Yukgap stared at her suspiciously.

“What’s wrong with that?”

Victoria crossed her arms proudly.

“Is there some law saying women can’t be Santa Claus?”

“The idea that Santa has to be male is nothing more than harmful gender stereotyping!”

Her mind was already made up.

Yukgap knew from painful experience that there was no stopping Victoria once she reached this state.

“U-Um, you really don’t have to go that far...”

The orphanage director, sensing danger, tried to calm her down.

Victoria grabbed her hand and answered with fierce determination.

“Don’t worry!”

“I’ll become the perfect Santa Claus for the children!”

Then she glanced at Yukgap and Nova.

“You two are obviously coming too, right?”

It was not a question.

It was a declaration.

Yukgap and Nova sighed and nodded.

“Don’t worry.”

“I’m coming because I’m too nervous to leave you alone.”

“Same.”

“For the children’s sake, I’m sticking right beside you.”

Whatever else happened, they could not allow this version of Victoria to wander around unsupervised.

She might go completely out of control without warning.

The children knew nothing about any of that.

For their sake, someone had to keep watch.

Whether she understood their true intentions or not, Victoria raised her voice enthusiastically.

“Great!”

“Then in the name of dreams and hope, we’ll create the perfect Christmas together!”

“The original Santa Claus was Saint Nicholas, a bishop who performed acts of charity for people in need and took the lead in helping children.”

Victoria explained while mixing chemicals in her laboratory coat.

Strange smoke rose several times from the flask in her hand.

“At first, nuns would give presents to children on the feast day of Saint Nicholas.”

“That tradition spread with Christianity and eventually became a worldwide celebration.”

Victoria poured the completed substance into a mold and continued.

“The modern image of Santa Claus began with illustrations by Thomas Nast, an American political cartoonist, in 1863.”

“Various later works added to that image until the Santa Claus everyone loves today was completed.”

Yukgap had been silently listening beside her.

He finally asked,

“That explanation was nice, but what exactly are you doing?”

“What else?”

“I’m preparing presents as Santa Claus.”

The moment they agreed to volunteer at the orphanage for Christmas, Victoria had gone straight to the laboratory.

She had been tirelessly making something ever since.

“Didn’t the orphanage say they already had money to buy the presents?”

“All we have to do is hand them out.”

Victoria immediately snapped back,

“How can Santa give children mass-produced goods?”

“Obviously I have to make the presents myself!”

“Don’t tell me you’re preparing something weird again.”

Yukgap hurriedly asked, seized by instinctive dread.

Ignoring him, Victoria pulled down a laboratory lever with all her strength.

“Mwahahahaha!”

“Children, just wait a little longer!”

“I’ll use every bit of my alchemy to give you Christmas presents you’ll never forget!”

Crackle!

Unsettling blue sparks surged through the laboratory.

Victoria’s sinister laughter echoed along with them.

“So what exactly is this outfit?”

Nova looked down at the green clothes she was wearing.

They were tight-fitting tights.

Her skirt, shoes, and even her hat were covered in flashy tassels and bells.

Every time she moved, they jingled loudly.

“Can’t you tell?”

Victoria answered excitedly.

“You’re an elf, Santa’s friend!”

Victoria, who had declared herself Santa Claus for the day, was already dressed completely in red with a matching hat.

In more ways than one, her outfit strongly contrasted with Nova’s elf costume.

“...”

“I made it with lots of care.”

Victoria asked again, completely unaware of Nova’s thoughts.

“What do you think?”

“Cute, right?”

Yukgap had changed into a similar elf outfit and already looked completely resigned.

“Don’t make that face.”

“I’m wearing one too.”

“Yeah.”

Nova finally nodded weakly in resignation.

“I guess this is the kind of thing I should have expected.”

Honestly, considering Victoria had prepared the clothes herself, Nova should probably just be grateful that they did not explode while being worn.
