Chapter 186

Chapter 186. A Goodbye for You (2)

“Why are you kids still here?”

Nova asked in alarm.

The children glanced at one another before answering one by one.

“Mom told us to stay here and play.”

“But none of the grown-ups came back.”

“There was a weird smell, and we heard scary noises too.”

Hearing that, Nova remembered the people from the audience earlier.

Apparently, these children had been brought here by the spectators and then stranded when everything suddenly descended into chaos.

Nova hurriedly shouted at them.

“Get out of here!”

“This building is on fire!”

“Your parents are probably outside!”

“But Mom told me not to go anywhere...”

Even after hearing Nova’s warning, the children only exchanged uncertain looks.

None of them seemed entirely convinced.

“Nova! What are you doing? I told you to run!”

At that moment, Yukgap heard her voice and came rushing over at high speed.

Nova stared at him in surprise.

“What about the other Archons?”

“I don’t know. I fought them for a bit and ran away.”

His body was still recovering, but it was covered in small injuries.

Apparently, he had fought the Archons rather fiercely to buy enough time for Nova to escape.

Nova immediately spoke to him.

“Perfect timing.”

“Yukgap, get these children outside.”

Yukgap stared at the gathered children in surprise.

“All of them?”

“It looks like the adults couldn’t evacuate them because everything happened so suddenly.”

“If they stay here, they might all die.”

Nova clung to him with more desperation than ever.

“Please.”

“Looking at them reminds me of my little sister.”

“I can’t just leave them here.”

Yukgap thought for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“All right.”

“I’ll put some effort into it.”

He put on the brightest smile he could manage and stretched out his large arms.

“Come on. Let’s go outside with this mister.”

But seeing Yukgap in his manifested Archon form only frightened the children.

They slowly backed away.

A few even looked openly hostile.

“Mister, what happened to your face?”

“Mom told me not to follow strangers.”

“You look like a monster!”

“Are you a monster?”

Apparently, his current appearance, somewhere between a human and a cheetah, was not exactly reassuring.

Yukgap trailed off, unsure how to explain himself.

“W-Well, you see...”

How was he supposed to explain himself to a group of children?

He certainly could not tell them the truth about being an Archon of Abraxas.

After struggling for an answer, he finally said,

“I’m Cheetahman, Hero of Justice.”

“Your parents asked me to come get you.”

The moment they heard the words Hero of Justice, the children’s eyes lit up.

“A hero?”

“Like the heroes in cartoons?”

“I’ve seen those!”

“Cheetahman? I like cheetahs!”

And thus, an experimental subject of Abraxas became Cheetahman, Hero of Justice.

Nova stared at him in disbelief.

“What the hell is Cheetahman?”

“It’s a thing.”

“Don’t ask.”

Then another explosion rang out in the distance.

Hearing it, Nova urgently spoke to Yukgap.

“Anyway, it’s too dangerous to stay here.”

“Take the children and evacuate now.”

“I’ll act as bait.”

“What?”

“You’ll be in danger!”

“Come with us!”

Yukgap shouted in alarm, but Nova immediately shook her head.

“The Archons will start tracking us again soon.”

“If I stay with you, the children might get caught in the attack too.”

“Alpha is extremely angry right now.”

“I can’t let them get dragged into this.”

“But Nova, you...”

“Don’t worry.”

“I’m a genius.”

“I’ve already figured out the layout of this building.”

“I’ll find another route and get out on my own.”

“You really think I can’t even keep myself alive?”

Nova deliberately acted confident to reassure him.

Then she pushed him lightly on the back.

“Go.”

She looked up at Yukgap and added in a voice more earnest than ever.

“Please.”

So many emotions were tangled in that single word.

Yukgap stared at her for a long moment before reluctantly nodding.

“All right.”

“Thank you.”

Nova managed a faint smile.

Yukgap then spread his arms toward the cluster of children staring up at him.

“Come on!”

“Let’s get outside with Cheetahman!”

Somehow, the childish hero name had worked.

The children finally dropped their guard and rushed toward him.

“Yeeeees!”

“Mister, carry me too!”

“How do you transform into Cheetahman?”

Bombarded with questions, Yukgap awkwardly began picking the children up.

Thanks to the larger body granted by his Archon form, carrying all of them did not look particularly difficult.

Nova quietly watched him for a moment.

Then she hurried away in the opposite direction.

“Ughhhhh...!”

Only after she had gotten far enough away did a harsh groan escape her.

She had been holding everything in because she did not want Yukgap or the children to see her in pain.

“Ughhh... nghhh...!”

Nova collapsed to the floor and clutched her head.

The pain continued without pause, as though something were scraping her brain out from the inside.

And the smoke filling the corridor was making it harder to breathe.

“Cough! Cough!”

Nova coughed violently through the sensation of her brain being sliced apart.

She had told Yukgap she would find her own way out.

But in truth, she had no real plan.

Right now, there was only one thought in her mind.

I have to get as far away from Yukgap and those children as possible.

“Ahh...”

Amid the rising pain and the heat choking off her breath, a sound that might have been a lament slipped naturally from her lips.

Boom!

A tremendous explosion rang out.

Flames surged through the shattered debris of the building.

Nova stared at them as though entranced.

[Nova Hanson.]

[After running and running, is this really where you ended up?]

Alpha’s voice came from beyond the flames.

Struggling beneath the suffocating pain, Nova asked cautiously,

“Alpha... is that you?”

But there was no electronic device nearby that could transmit Alpha’s voice.

Even if there had been, there was no way it would still be functioning properly in this condition.

The thought made Nova laugh for some reason.

“Or have I finally gone completely insane?”

[Think whatever you want.]

Alpha’s voice from beyond the fire was calm.

It sounded almost sympathetic.

Or perhaps mocking.

[Everyone stepped forward to save you.]

[And yet this is how you ended up.]

“Yeah.”

“What a meaningless life.”

She had run from death over and over again.

And after all that, she had still ended up here.

It was so absurd that all she could do was laugh.

[Give up.]

[You’ve reached your limit.]

[I can make it easy for you.]

Alpha’s voice from beyond the flames was more tempting than ever.

Even while gasping in pain, Nova shook her head.

“I can’t do that.”

“I may not have chosen to be born into this life, but I won’t let you decide even the moment of my death.”

Nova staggered toward the spreading flames.

She knew perfectly well that she could not endure this without painkillers.

She could instinctively feel that she was nearing her limit.

In a situation like this, she almost felt grateful that the pain tearing through her brain was making bright flashes burst across her vision.

At least she could barely see what was ahead.

[Aren’t you afraid?]

When she reached the end, Alpha asked one more time.

Nova wondered how she should answer.

Then she quietly remembered something Victoria had once told her.

“What kind of woman could accomplish anything big without at least this much nerve? Right?”

With those words, Nova gently closed her eyes.

A small farewell escaped her lips.

“Goodbye.”

The blue sky.

The beautiful sea.

The crashing waves.

The flowers that bloomed when spring came.

The sunlight pouring down in summer.

The leaves changing color in autumn.

The snow drifting through winter.

Day and night.

Morning and evening.

A yesterday she could remember.

A tomorrow she could look forward to.

And all the people passing through the spaces in between.

The wind brushing against her cheek.

Her precious friend, Victoria.

The cheerful cook, Yukgap.

The somewhat crooked golem, Robert.

Restaurant Shelley.

The nuns of the Herrington Convent.

And her precious little sister, Anna, who was probably still waiting for her even now.

Nova had called her life meaningless.

Yet there were far more things she remembered than she expected.

She gathered all of them together and expressed them in a single phrase.

“Everything I loved...”

With those words, Nova let herself fall into the flames.

The rapidly spreading fire swallowed her small, fragile body with terrifying ease.

[It’s dangerous if you stay there.]

[Everyone, evacuate.]

Alpha’s order came through the communicator.

On the rooftop, No. 2 urgently asked,

“What about Nova Hanson?”

[I’ll handle that myself.]

Hearing that, No. 2 immediately issued orders to the other Archons over the communicator.

“Alpha’s orders.”

“Everyone, withdraw.”

The Archons possessed transcendent physical abilities and regeneration.

Escaping from the building would not be difficult for them.

But there was another problem.

“Nothing you do is going to end the way you want.”

Victoria, still confronting them, breathed heavily and continued glaring with open hostility.

Alpha’s mocking voice came through the communicator.

[Do you really think so, Victoria?]

Then Alpha continued lightly,

[Don’t worry.]

[You and I are still friends.]

[No, you’re the only one who can truly be my friend.]

[We’re special.]

[And I don’t abandon my friends.]

The moment she finished speaking, the sound of flapping wings approached.

No. 8 flew in.

He wrapped his legs around Victoria’s body and said,

“Alpha ordered me to come.”

“I’ll take you down to the first floor.”

“No!”

Victoria immediately struggled.

Then No. 7 suddenly appeared out of thin air.

Looking thoroughly fed up, she shoved Victoria hard toward the edge of the rooftop.

“Stop arguing and go already.”

“Aaah!”

Caught off guard by No. 7’s strength, Victoria staggered over the edge.

No. 8 immediately took flight.

“Hold on tight.”

Caught in No. 8’s legs, Victoria was forcibly lifted into the air.

No. 8 spread his wings like a glider and slowly descended toward the ground.

Through the smoke blanketing the area, their overlapping silhouettes drifted downward together.
