Chapter 122

Chapter 122. The Four Heavenly Kings (2)

The girl in the black kimono began introducing herself in a clear, bright voice.

“My name is Yuuki Hina. Remember it.”

“Yuuki.”

After getting lectured by Matsushita, Kang Yujin properly used her family name this time.

“How rude. Calling me that casually without an honorific.”

“Fine, fine. Ms. Yuuki.”

Kang Yujin couldn’t be bothered arguing, so he simply went along with it.

Yuuki snickered.

“The man driving in front is Narukami Kaoru.”

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Kang Yujin.”

The driver lifted his left hand in greeting.

“And the old man in the passenger seat is Sakuma Hajime.”

“I would appreciate it if you didn’t call me an old man, young lady.”

The man in the passenger seat turned his head and smiled.

“But you are an old man. Don’t you think so, Sakuma?”

“My heart is still young.”

“So everything except your heart is middle-aged.”

After exchanging those words, Yuuki turned back toward Kang Yujin.

“Including Matsushita, who isn’t here right now, the four of us are the Tenka Four Heavenly Kings.”

“When I heard ‘Four Heavenly Kings,’ I expected scary-looking monsters. You’re nothing like that.”

Sakuma aside, Narukami was a fairly handsome young man.

And Yuuki was a petite girl.

“Scary-looking monsters? Ah, you mean the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings. That’s a funny joke.”

Yuuki covered her mouth and chuckled.

“Were you surprised that we didn’t match the image?”

“I’m more surprised that you suddenly approached me like this.”

“Hmm. I see.”

Yuuki turned to look out the window.

“This area is pretty lively. There aren’t many collapsed buildings either. If it weren’t raining, I imagine there’d be plenty of people walking around.”

"..."

“Ah, Narukami. Stop here for a moment.”

At Yuuki’s instruction, Narukami pulled the car over.

Sakuma got out from the passenger seat and opened the rear door for her.

“What are you doing?”

“Order something from that street stall for me.”

Taking the umbrella Sakuma opened for her, Yuuki pointed toward the street stalls lining Jongno.

“I’ve always wanted to try authentic Korean tteokbokki if I ever came to Korea.”

“You know what tteokbokki tastes like?”

“Don’t treat me like an idiot. You can eat food from almost anywhere in the world in Japan. Even in times like these.”

Yuuki snorted, then beckoned at Kang Yujin to hurry up.

“Come on. Order something for me. Pick the tastiest combination you can.”

“Hey...”

“Koreans are the kind of people who want to be as kind as possible whenever a foreigner says they want to try Korean food, aren’t they?”

"..."

That was difficult to deny.

“Spicy, sweet, and very satisfying.”

“Good for you...”

In the end, Kang Yujin had been forced to wait in front of the street stall until Yuuki finished eating her tteokbokki.

“Why do you look so unhappy? I bought some for you too.”

“If I wanted some, I could’ve bought it with my own money...”

“You ate it happily enough. Stop complaining.”

"..."

Kang Yujin felt irritation rising inside him, but he forced himself to endure it because of the elderly woman running the stall.

“It’s been ten years since I had a Japanese customer. Tourists used to come by sometimes in the old days, but you don’t see that anymore. It’s so nice.”

She had looked genuinely delighted.

“But you guys speak Korean pretty well.”

“You didn’t know? There are items that automatically translate languages.”

“Oh. Those exist?”

“I can speak Korean without an item, though.”

Yuuki wiped the corner of her mouth with a tissue.

“Keito spoke Korean well too, didn’t he?”

“Yeah.”

“I received similar education. Ever since I was little.”

“Sounds like both of you were born into good families.”

“Who knows...”

Just like Keito, Yuuki trailed off vaguely.

“What’s your relationship with Keito?”

“His fiancée.”

“Fiancée?”

“To be precise, former fiancée. The engagement was called off.”

An engagement in this day and age...

Maybe they really had both come from prestigious families.

While Kang Yujin was thinking that, Yuuki bowed politely toward the elderly stall owner.

“Thank you for the meal. It was delicious.”

Unlike the way she spoke to Kang Yujin, her voice was polite and gentle.

“Then let’s go, Kang Yujin.”

Yuuki opened her umbrella and left the street stall first.

Kang Yujin opened the umbrella Sakuma had handed him and followed.

“Where are you going?”

Yuuki was walking in a direction completely different from where the car was parked.

“I want to look around over there too.”

“Hey! Enough already!”

Kang Yujin shouted and grabbed her shoulder.

At that moment, Yuuki suddenly raised her head.

“With rain this heavy, no one can hear us. Not the Constellations. Not Sakuma or Narukami.”

“What?”

“Don’t make a scene. Just pretend you’re indulging one of my whims and follow me.”

Caught off guard, Kang Yujin listened as Yuuki spoke rapidly.

“We haven’t known each other long, but I could already tell what kind of person you are from how you treated me and how you treated that old woman at the stall.”

"..."

“I’m telling you this because I believe you’re fundamentally kind-hearted. Hear me out.”

With that, Yuuki resumed walking.

Still confused, Kang Yujin followed her.

“I know Keito is one of the Vessels meant for the Demon King’s return. I also know you’re the same.”

“What?”

“Sakuma and Narukami don’t know. Within the Tenka Restoration Association, other than Keito himself, I’m probably the only one who does.”

Yuuki continued speaking as they walked through the rain.

“Keito intends to obtain the Demon King’s power. He doesn’t believe it’s dangerous. Even if something goes wrong, he thinks he’ll be able to control it with his own strength.”

“Ha Mina isn’t going to let things work out that conveniently.”

“Keito doesn’t care. He believes everything will ultimately proceed according to his will.”

"..."

Well.

That certainly sounded like him.

“But I don’t believe that.”

Yuuki’s voice grew heavier.

“It’s too dangerous.”

"..."

“The others in the Tenka Restoration Association, people like Sakuma and Narukami, probably wouldn’t care much even if they learned the truth. They worship Keito’s strength. If Keito becomes stronger, they’ll welcome it.”

Yuuki paused.

“Of course, that’s assuming Keito remains the leader of the Tenka Restoration Association afterward.”

So that was why she had brought Kang Yujin somewhere Sakuma and Narukami couldn’t hear them.

“That’s why I want to ask you for something.”

“What exactly are you asking?”

Yuuki took a deep breath.

“Become Keito’s friend.”

Kang Yujin stared at her.

“And convince him to join you in destroying Ha Mina’s scheme.”

Her voice was completely serious.

“I can tell. Keito sees you as his destined rival, but separately from that, he also feels a certain closeness toward you.”

"..."

“If you try to build a friendship with Keito, he won’t reject it.”

Kang Yujin remembered his clash with Keito the night before.

Considering Keito’s attitude then, Yuuki’s words weren’t entirely unreasonable.

“If that happens, Keito won’t kill you. How could he kill his friend?”

“So if he doesn’t kill me, he can’t become the Demon King?”

“Right. Ha Mina said the Vessels would kill each other until the final survivor obtained the Demon King’s power.”

"..."

“You and Keito can join forces and kill Ha Mina together. That benefits you too, doesn’t it? Ha Mina is your enemy as well.”

“You know a lot about me.”

“I know almost everything Keito knows.”

Yuuki seemed to occupy a somewhat special position among the Four Heavenly Kings.

Unlike the others, she casually called Keito by his given name.

Maybe the two really were close in private.

“Sorry, but no.”

“What?”

Yuuki stopped walking.

“Why?”

“Because I have no reason to do that.”

Kang Yujin answered coldly.

“I’m not a child. I’m not going to become someone’s friend because another person told me to.”

“What are you talking about?! That isn’t the important part...”

“I already planned to hunt down Ha Mina and beat her into the ground someday, whether Keito helps or not.”

Kang Yujin continued.

“Working with Keito might make that easier. But I don’t think it’s something worth manipulating a relationship behind his back for.”

“This isn’t manipulation! This is just...!”

“Then should we tell Keito about this conversation?”

Yuuki flinched.

“If what you’re doing is justified, then it shouldn’t matter if Keito knows, right?”

“Wait. You can’t.”

“You can’t, right?”

Kang Yujin looked at her calmly.

“Then that alone means your request isn’t right.”

“But...!”

“How things go between me and Keito is for the two of us to decide.”

Cooperating with Keito wasn’t a bad idea.

But Kang Yujin didn’t see any reason to deliberately create a friendship with him.

If they naturally developed some kind of relationship, that was different.

He had no need for something artificial.

“Think about it again!”

“I said no.”

Feeling exhausted, Kang Yujin sighed.

“If you keep pushing me, I’m seriously going to tell Keito.”

Of course, he had no real intention of doing that.

But he needed to warn her this much if he wanted her to back down.

"..."

Yuuki stared at him while biting her lip.

Only after a long silence did she speak again.

“Fine, Kang Yujin.”

Yuuki threw away her umbrella.

The pouring rain drenched her immediately as she glared at Kang Yujin with frightening eyes.

“Let’s settle this with a match.”

“If I win, you listen to me. If I lose, I won’t bother you about this again. Fair?”

“You really do whatever you want, don’t you?”

Kang Yujin sighed.

She had been forcing her own pace on him from the beginning.

“But actually, this works out.”

Kang Yujin tossed his own umbrella onto the ground.

The downpour soaked his entire body, but it actually felt refreshing.

“I wanted to wrap this up quickly and join the others anyway.”

And separate from that...

he also wanted to see how strong the Tenka Four Heavenly Kings really were.

Earlier, he and his companions had discussed how difficult it was to judge their actual strength.

This was a perfect chance to find out.

I should at least get that much out of this.

With that thought, Kang Yujin stepped back slightly.

Yuuki was small.

She was also wearing traditional Japanese clothing that looked difficult to move in.

She probably wasn’t a close-combat fighter.

Giving her some distance would likely allow her to demonstrate her abilities properly.

"..."

Yuuki raised her right hand.

Kang Yujin slowly clenched his fists, watching carefully for whatever attack was about to come.

At that instant...

something impossibly heavy crushed down on him.

“Ugh...?!”

Under the unexpected pressure, Kang Yujin saw a red-faced giant standing beside Yuuki.

It was nearly ten meters tall.

Five horns protruded from its head, and several eyes were embedded across its grotesque face.

The giant was pressing its palm down toward Kang Yujin.

“My A-rank Constellation is the ‘Wine-Drinking Child’... Shuten-doji, one of Japan’s Three Great Evil Spirits.”

Yuuki’s cold voice reached him.

“And this is my Constellation Armament.”

“Constellation... Armament?”

“That’s right.”

Yuuki continued.

“The Constellation Armament of the ‘Wine-Drinking Child’ recreates the terrifying might Shuten-doji once displayed over old Kyoto.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“And I can use its Maximum Manifestation.”

Maximum Manifestation.

The stage that allowed someone to draw out a Constellation’s power to the fullest without restriction.

Even Lee Jukheon, who had once been contracted with a D-rank Constellation, had displayed tremendous combat power when he manifested the Azure Steel Sword through Maximum Manifestation.

“Then that giant is...!”

“That’s right.”

Yuuki smiled coldly.

“Pretty strong, isn’t it?”

Kang Yujin gritted his teeth and tried to endure.

“For reference...”

Yuuki’s voice remained calm.

“Among the Tenka Four Heavenly Kings, I’m the strongest in close combat.”

“I... see...!”

The giant pressed harder.

Kang Yujin felt his knees begin to buckle.

“What did they say in Korean at times like this? I think I heard it in a movie once.”

The girl’s cold voice came through the rain.

“Right.”

Her lips curled into a smile.

“I’ll flatten you like dried fish.”

The overwhelming force crushed down on Kang Yujin.

“Brother Sakuma, it sounds like something’s happening.”

“Leave it.”

Narukami looked out through the car window.

Sakuma answered without much interest.

“The young lady probably found something she didn’t like again. You know nobody but Lord Keito can stop her once she gets like that.”

“But what if she destroys a building while fighting here? We’re right in the middle of Eight Guardians territory.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

Sakuma pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.

“This land will belong to the Tenka Restoration Association eventually anyway. Whatever the Eight Guardians say, just let it go in one ear and out the other.”

“Well... that is true, but...”

“I said don’t worry.”

Sakuma opened the window.

Looking out over the rain-soaked streets of Jongno, he exhaled cigarette smoke.

“Soon enough, every last one of them will be bowing before Lord Keito anyway.”
