Chapter 57

Chapter 057. Lovers of the North Wind (2)

Meanwhile, preparations for the festival were in full swing in the banquet grounds before Hongyang Palace.

Behind the stage, musicians were rehearsing.

Attendants sat in a line, hanging colorful lanterns from thick ropes.

Bam ordered servants from the Rang Merchant Group to carry huge porcelain jars filled with flower arrangements and place them between the pillars.

Her eyes shone as she directed the work.

A wooden platform had been divided into several levels, with officials seated according to rank.

Normally, merchants had to sit on the lower level beneath the stairs.

However, according to a prior agreement with Beopsindang, the Rang Merchant Group had been allowed seats on the upper platform.

Just imagining herself sitting high above and demanding that the king of Hui Kingdom finally pay the trade debts he owed made Bam's blood boil with excitement.

There was also one other interesting detail.

A temporary toilet, called a pyeoncha, had been placed surprisingly close to the drinking area.

"Why did they put it this close?"

Bam tilted her head.

"Do the nobles need somewhere nearby in case nature calls while they're drinking?"

One servant answered.

"Priest Jin had it installed at Captain Hoyeon's request. Apparently, he claimed the cloth used for the screens was expensive and charged them a huge amount."

Bam burst out laughing when she saw the heavy black cloth surrounding the toilet.

Clothes, ornaments, weapons...

Who could stop Hoyeon's obsession with the color black?

"He squeezed that much money out of them over a toilet? Should I praise him?"

She laughed for a while.

Then her blue eyes suddenly widened.

"By the way, where is Hoyeon?"

"..."

"Why has he been going out so often lately?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"Is he hiding something from me?"

As Bam bombarded them with questions, the servants exchanged uneasy looks.

"If we tell you, I'm not sure we'll survive..."

"What?"

Bam immediately stepped toward them as if she might grab someone by the throat.

"If you have something to say, say it properly."

"Well..."

One servant cautiously spoke.

"We heard Captain Hoyeon has been secretly meeting a woman."

For someone like Hoyeon to get caught by ordinary servants...

It clearly had not been a carefully planned meeting.

That only made things more suspicious.

"Hoyeon meeting a woman alone?"

Bam frowned.

"Why would he do that?"

"She seemed to be a woman of high status. She entered the place separately from the captain, with some time between them."

"Security around the area was extremely strict too."

Another servant lowered his voice.

"It almost felt like... a secret rendezvous."

The servants could not continue.

The atmosphere around Bam had completely changed.

She was forcing a smile on the outside, but violent emotions were moving inside her.

It felt cold yet fierce, like waves crashing against the bow of a ship just before a storm.

"That's all you know?"

Bam stared at them.

"Why didn't you follow them inside?"

"Oh, please. The captain is famous for catching ghosts. What were we supposed to do if he caught us following him?"

"Before we could even report back to you, his dagger would've gone straight through our throats."

"Where is the place?"

The servants froze.

"You're not actually planning to go there, are you?"

They swallowed nervously.

What if Lady Rang's anger led to an irreversible disaster?

The very future of the merchant group seemed to be at stake.

"Just tell me where it is."

Bam narrowed her eyes.

"I'll handle the rest."

This wasn't childish jealousy.

She was only curious about what was happening.

That was all.

Ever since they came to this country, Hoyeon had been acting strange.

Repeating those excuses inside her head, Bam quickly left the banquet grounds.

She walked so fast that no one could block her path.

Meanwhile, an old bookstore stood in a narrow alley behind Hongyang's marketplace, barely wide enough for one person to pass through.

The windows were arranged so sunlight entered at an angle, preventing the paper from discoloring.

Stacks of scrolls covered the tables.

When Hyeon entered the bookstore, he saw Princess Moryang of Yeohae Kingdom sitting at the table farthest inside.

Perhaps her eyesight was poor, because her nose was practically buried in the book.

Even when the large Hyeon approached, she did not notice him.

Apparently, the rumors that she was an obsessive reader were true.

Hyeon cleared his throat.

Moryang raised her head.

She had an intelligent and gentle appearance.

Her pale hair and faded eyes, features common among the people of Yeohae Kingdom, immediately stood out.

Some old books even said their eyes resembled those of ancient people.

She was now the princess of a fallen kingdom.

Yet perhaps because she had left her homeland long ago, there was little sadness on her face.

Hyeon stood before her and bowed.

"I am Hoyeon, captain of the Rang Merchant Group's mercenaries."

He continued,

"We have met refugees from Yeohae Kingdom in the nearby waters and promised to return Your Highness to them."

Hyeon briefly explained everything.

How they planned to remove her from the detached palace.

How she could later meet the Yeohae refugees.

And how they could escape Hui Kingdom afterward.

After hearing that her homeland had fallen, the princess must have lived like a ghost inside the detached palace, treated with contempt.

Hyeon wanted to show her at least one final courtesy.

"The Crown Prince of Hui Kingdom has disappeared."

"..."

"The promises made by our ancestors no longer mean anything."

He looked at her calmly.

"Forget your life here and leave with your people."

Moryang listened quietly.

Then she gave an unexpected answer.

"I apologize for saying this, but..."

She raised her eyes.

"I do not wish to leave Hui Kingdom."

Hyeon's expression did not change, but his voice sharpened.

"What do you mean?"

Moryang continued.

The first time she arrived in Hui Kingdom with the Yeohae delegation, she had fallen in love with Crown Prince Nam Hyeon at first sight.

The moment she lifted the curtain of the carriage opposite hers, she saw the brilliantly handsome face of the man who was supposed to become her husband.

"It would be difficult to find such a peerlessly handsome man in any age."

A dreamy expression crossed her face.

"I was so happy that I was the one promised to him."

Then she stared directly at Hyeon.

"I believe he will return to Hui Kingdom."

Hyeon shook his head.

Had reading too many books damaged her mind?

"What nonsense..."

His voice hardened.

"What about the people wandering the sea while waiting for your answer?"

Anyone born into royalty had to carry the fate that came with their blood.

That applied to both Hyeon and Moryang.

Perhaps Moryang's careless talk about personal feelings was merely a way of testing his reaction.

Moryang released a long breath.

Only then did her expression become truly serious.

"I have lived outside my homeland for far too long."

Her pale gray-brown eyes calmly met Hyeon's.

"I have no foundation from which to rebuild my country."

She paused.

"Forgive me for asking, Mercenary Captain."

Her gaze sharpened.

"Why do you think the royal family of Hui Kingdom kept me alive after I became completely useless to them?"

Hyeon lowered his eyes.

"Could it be..."

He looked back at her.

"Is my guess correct?"

"Yes."

Moryang nodded.

"Anyone who knows the true meaning behind our ancestors' promise should also know the legend of the Seven Towers."

The former king, King Namcheol, had left an official decree regarding the marriage alliance.

[Through the marriage of the two kingdoms, the seven eggs of the sea will shine with brilliant golden light.]

Yeohae Kingdom had been a mysterious nation where ancient learning and technology were gathered.

A legend said that weapons were hidden inside seven pillars rising from the sea of Yeohae.

And only royal blood could unlock their power.

"Why are you revealing such an important secret to someone of low status like me?"

Moryang smiled faintly.

"You are standing before me dressed as a merchant."

"So?"

"So I am negotiating the value of my life accordingly."

From the moment they met, she had never looked down on Hyeon.

His disciplined speech and behavior made it impossible for her to believe he was truly a commoner.

Even within darkness, the man seemed to radiate his own light, like a sacred constellation in the night sky.

"The refugees and I will surrender ourselves and help Crown Prince Nam Hyeon reclaim the throne."

"..."

"But I have one condition."

Her voice was mournful yet firm.

"If the crown prince later takes the throne, he must accept me as queen and absorb my people into the noble class of Hui Kingdom."

Hyeon said nothing.

"That is the most realistic way for me to survive."

She looked directly at him.

"And it is the only way to guarantee the lives and safety of the refugees who waited for me."

Hyeon slowly shook his head.

"The royal family of Hui Kingdom cannot guarantee the safety of queens or concubines."

He gave a bitter smile.

He thought of his mother, who had died young, and the Ban Clan, which had suffered the humiliation of destruction.

"And for the next several years, the entire country will probably be drenched in blood because of civil war."

Moryang listened.

Hyeon continued calmly.

"Besides..."

His eyes lowered.

"Crown Prince Nam Hyeon probably has no intention of entering a political marriage with the Princess of Yeohae."

Moryang had already realized his identity but was pretending otherwise.

So Hyeon also spoke as though discussing someone else.

"Why?"

At her question, Hyeon closed his mouth.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

At that same time, someone was moving across the roof of the bookstore in order to spy on the secret meeting.

Bam removed several roof tiles, opened a hole in the ceiling, and slipped inside.

Then she crawled along the long horizontal beam like a thieving cat.

Eventually, she reached the floor and quietly entered the small room used by the shop owner.

There was a narrow crack in one wall, perfect for looking into the room next door.

That woman looked like someone of high status.

Why was she meeting Hoyeon alone without even a guard?

The fact that the woman was also rather beautiful made Bam even more nervous.

Then a familiar voice entered her ears.

Hoyeon spoke.

"Because he has already given his heart to someone."

Bam's eyes widened.

What?

Had that woman confessed to Hoyeon and been rejected?

Moryang was also momentarily speechless at Hyeon's firm answer.

He continued.

"If you truly wish to help the crown prince, then do not rely on a promise tied to a political marriage."

His gaze remained steady.

"Choose to help him through your own will."

After hearing Hyeon's suggestion, Moryang seemed completely relieved.

She smiled.

It was a warm, gentle smile like the setting sun.

A short while later, Bam barely managed to escape the complicated alleys.

She stood outside, covering her mouth.

He already gave his heart to someone?

Who?

At this point, it had become a matter of life and death.

A violent whirlpool began raging inside Bam's heart.
