Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The morning after finally eating a delicious meal...

I woke up in a wonderful mood.

A smile naturally appeared as I stared at the Mythic seed resting in my palm.

What in the world will come out of this?

A seed left by spirits that ruled the ancient earth.

Whatever emerged had to have incredible farming abilities.

But before planting the Mythic seed, I had something else to take care of.

The potatoes I had planted earlier were finally ready for harvest.

I practically skipped toward the field.

I was excited about planting the mysterious seed.

But honestly...

I was also having far too much fun farming potatoes.

They were responsible for the survival of our tribe, after all.

Holding the stone I used instead of a hoe, I carefully dug through the soil.

[D-Rank Potato harvested.]

[D-Rank Potato harvested.]

Ordinary potatoes appeared one after another.

These were precious food supplies that needed to be stored in the warehouse for the Great Famine approaching this winter.

After finishing the important harvest...

It was time for today’s main event.

“Good. Finally time to plant this.”

I took the from my clothes.

A Mythic item.

Even after looking again, its smooth surface was beautiful.

Where should I plant it?

I chose the absolute best spot.

The center of my field.

Plenty of sunlight.

Good drainage.

I carefully dug a hole.

Then placed the smooth, stone-like seed inside.

As I covered it with soil and gently patted the ground...

I thought I felt something twitch.

Was I imagining things?

Ding!

[You have planted a Mythic Seed!]

[Level Up!]

[You have reached Level 6.]

[Lv.5 → Lv.6]

[Level increase grants Stat Point +1.]

[Class Skill Proficiency has increased.]

“Huh?”

I stared blankly at the flood of messages covering my vision.

I was used to earning stat points through titles.

But what were these other things?

Random Draw Ticket?

This game had a gacha system too?

And what was this Affinity trait?

Getting this many rewards meant one thing.

This seed must be extremely important within the System.

First...

I should finish planting it.

I patted the soil and activated my skill.

“BARBARIAAN!”

The Warrior’s Roar echoed.

Growth Acceleration entered the seed.

[Mythic Seed - Time Until Germination: 5 days 23:59:00]

“That’s long...”

Normal potatoes only took around two days now.

This was almost three times longer.

But considering it was Mythic...

It actually felt surprisingly short.

More importantly...

The fact that there was a countdown meant it could germinate!

“Grow well.”

I patted the soil.

“Drink good water. Get warm sunlight.”

Then I looked threateningly toward the nearby potato plants.

“Potatoes, don’t steal its food.”

After offering my sincere farmer’s blessing and unnecessarily threatening innocent potatoes, I opened my Status Window.

The new Trait immediately caught my attention.

“Nice.”

I naturally smiled.

At first glance, it seemed like a simple trait.

But for someone living directly beside the Black Barrier, it was an enormous survival bonus.

What kind of creature will be born?

It was called a Spirit Tree Seed.

Maybe it would be something like the cute earth spirits that appeared in novels and games.

A fairy with translucent wings.

Or perhaps a tiny fluffy creature made from soil.

My heart already began pounding with excitement.

And with that anticipation...

Time, which had felt like it would never move, slowly passed.

Finally...

The morning of the expected germination day arrived.

The sun hadn’t fully risen yet.

Suddenly, a scream tore through the peaceful village.

“Izak! Izak! Big problem!”

The entrance of my tent nearly broke apart as Malko charged inside.

The enormous warrior was shaking as though he had seen a ghost.

Because he was ugly, the sight was somehow even scarier.

“W-What happened?”

“Your field! The shaman’s sacred field!”

His face was pale.

“A strange magical beast appeared! Big problem! Everything is ruined! You need to come immediately!”

My heart dropped.

A magical beast?

In my precious field?

That field contained the potatoes that would protect us through winter.

More importantly...

It contained the Mythic Seed of the Ancient Spirit Tree I had carefully planted.

What if that monster had eaten it?

Oh God.

No!

I didn’t even properly dress.

I grabbed a kitchen knife and ran outside with Malko.

At one side of the village...

Barbarian warriors had already gathered in a circle around my field.

Chief Zakan stood there too.

His greatsword was drawn.

His expression was tense.

“What happened?!”

Strangely...

These fierce, brave barbarian warriors weren’t entering the field.

They were standing outside like nervous dogs that badly needed to use the bathroom.

“Move! I’ll go!”

I pushed through the crowd.

Zakan raised a hand and stopped me.

“Dangerous, Izak.”

His eyes were serious.

“It is extremely violent and dangerous! We cannot lose our precious shaman.”

“Then you go, Zakan.”

“...”

His face stiffened.

Then he quietly looked away.

What the hell were these idiots scared of?

I leaned around Zakan’s wide shoulder.

And the moment I saw what was standing in the middle of my precious field...

My thoughts stopped.

“That is...”

“Scary! Too scary!”

The barbarians whispered fearfully.

In the dim light of dawn...

Something was angrily breathing in the middle of the rows I had carefully dug.

How tall was it?

About the size of my palm?

It was tiny.

Its body was plump.

Round.

Wait...

Was that...

“A potato...?”

I muttered blankly.

The creature suddenly released a strange, high-pitched scream and turned toward me.

Whoa!

That was frightening!

I flinched.

The creature began wildly waving its short, chubby arms as if starting an engine.

Then...

“POTATOOOO!”

“AAAAH! POTATO GHOST!”

Oh my God.

The barbarians panicked when a potato with eyes, a nose, and a mouth screamed at them.

And it wasn’t just a talking potato.

Short, thick arms and legs grew from its round body.

They had exactly the same texture as potato skin.

Almost like a ginseng root.

Why does it look so angry...?

Despite its naturally cute appearance, the creature had narrowed eyes and a deeply furrowed brow.

It looked like a delinquent potato angry at the entire world.

Three fresh green leaves grew from the top of its round head like little horns.

Wait.

No.

Surely not.

The cute spirit that emerged from my Mythic Seed couldn’t possibly be this potato, right?

I swallowed and stared at it.

Malko grabbed my shoulder and shook me.

“W-What is that, Shaman?! Monster? Potato ghost?”

“Very small. But scary! Very angry!”

A group of gigantic muscular warriors were trembling before an angry potato the size of my palm.

Could I really turn these guys into the strongest barbarian tribe?

I was speechless at the ridiculous scene.

“Potatoooo...!”

While everyone remained frozen...

The creature seemed unhappy that giants had entered its territory.

It waved its tiny arms and legs.

Then it began swinging the three leaves on its head like whips.

SLAP! SLAP!

“Ow! It stings! Aaaagh! I die!”

The leaves repeatedly slapped Malko’s shin.

They didn’t seem to cause any actual damage.

But stupid Malko became pale and screamed that he had been cursed.

“Chief! What do we do? Cut it? Potato attacks!”

“No! Izak’s field will be damaged!”

Sweat covered Zakan’s face.

He awkwardly held his greatsword and looked at me.

Haa...

This was a complete disaster.

To understand what was happening, I raised my trembling hand and used my skill.

“BARBARIAN!”

With the Warrior’s Roar, the Peeking window appeared.

I unconsciously read the name floating inside it.

“...Gamdra...gora?”

“POTATOOOO!”

Had I correctly called its species?

The Gamdragora placed both tiny hands on its hips.

It stared up at me and screamed.

Then...

Hug!

It suddenly threw itself against my leg.

Then it rubbed against me affectionately.

“Gasp! Izak tamed magical beast!”

“He defeated it with Warrior’s Roar!”

[Trait activated.]

That isn’t what happened, idiots.

“Our shaman is amazing.”

For some reason, Zakan looked proud.

A little later.

Inside the shaman’s tent.

==========

“You little thing... what exactly are you?”

The round creature wandered around in front of me.

Outside, it had acted like a gangster, whipping enormous barbarian warriors with its leaves.

But now...

It was tightly hugging my knee and smiling with crescent-shaped eyes.

“Potato!”

It tried to climb my thigh using its short, chubby arms and legs.

The sight was surprisingly adorable.

Every tiny step it took across the dirt floor was so cute that I almost imagined little boing, boing sounds.

The creature refused to leave my side.

I stroked the top of its round head while thinking deeply.

Did it become a potato spirit because I planted it right beside potatoes?

Even so...

It was supposed to be a Mythic spirit.

Had it taken the form of such a humble survival crop because of me?!

I suddenly felt guilty.

I swallowed and gently poked its round cheek.

Then a frightening thought ran down my spine.

Wait...

Someone might eat it.

It had tiny arms and legs.

But if it curled up...

It looked exactly like an ordinary potato.

I imagined the spirit being tossed into a giant pot and boiled.

A chill ran through me.

What if the barbarians accidentally ate it?!

I needed something that clearly separated it from normal potatoes.

While I was thinking deeply, I noticed the small box lying in one corner.

The box the seed had originally been inside.

Right!

I saw the elegant red ribbon that had decorated it.

An idea appeared.

I placed the creature down from my lap.

Then I picked up the ribbon.

“Come here.”

The Gamdragora quickly ran over and hugged my leg.

I carefully tied the red ribbon around one of the three green leaves growing from its head.

A small, pretty bow.

Done!

A potato spirit wearing a red ribbon!

“Potato?”

The creature noticed something new on its head.

Its short, chubby hand reached up and touched the ribbon.

Maybe it liked the soft silk.

Or perhaps it simply liked having its own special decoration.

Its black eyes sparkled.

[The Earth Spirit has acquired bound item .]

[The Earth Spirit is deeply moved by receiving its first gift.]

[The Earth Spirit feels strong attachment toward you.]

“POTATO!”

Was that good?

The creature became so excited that it began jumping in place with its tiny legs.

Then it spread its arms.

It ran toward me.

It rubbed its round cheeks against me affectionately.

Apparently, it loved the ribbon.

I stared down at the smiling potato spirit wearing its red bow.

What a strange feeling.

For a Mythic Spirit, it was unbelievably pathetic.

For a potato...

It was dangerously cute.

“You are cute, but...”

I crossed my arms.

“What can you actually do?”

Its eyes sparkled.

The spirit jumped down from my knee.

Then it puffed out its tiny chest and planted its hands on its hips.

The three leaves on its head moved proudly.

“POTATO!”

The creature shouted confidently.

“What? You’re going to show me something?”

I rested my chin on one hand and watched with interest.

The creature snorted proudly.

Then it stretched out one tiny hand.

Oh?

Was it finally going to do something impressive?
