Chapter 108

Chapter 108

"It's been a while..."

With trembling hands, Hong Man-gi picked up a cup of makgeolli. As though making a toast, he poured some into the empty cup in front of Bellok.

The alcohol did not fill the cup. Instead, it flowed straight through and spilled onto the floor.

Even so, Bellok gave a bitter smile simply from smelling its aroma.

"What on earth... happened to you? How could someone like you end up..."

Bellok covered the hole in his abdomen with his enormous hand and calmly began to speak.

"Those snake-like bastards... They were hunting dogs sent by Cha Mu-jin."

His recollection took them back to a rainy night in the back alleys of the Shadow Market, not long ago.

It had been a night when the rain poured down just as heavily as it did today.

Bellok had finished a late dinner made from the leftover parts of the Hellfire Boar he had given Hong Man-gi.

He was just about to leave his hideout.

It had been a fairly pleasant day, and he had even enjoyed a moderate amount of alcohol.

But as he stepped through the red iron door of the market, his instincts detected murderous intent despite his drunkenness.

The marketplace, which would normally have been bustling with activity, was as silent as a graveyard.

There were no merchants calling out to customers, no drunkards, and not even a single rat.

Only the sound of the rain filled the silence.

"Come out. Stop hiding like a bunch of rats."

Bellok growled.

At that moment, dozens of shadows rose from the darkness simultaneously.

They were men wearing black suits and masks.

The Shadow Walkers, an assassination unit directly under the Hunter Association.

Unlike ordinary Hunters, they had been trained as killing machines with their emotions stripped away.

They carried specially designed Mana Suppression Handcuffs that could interrupt the flow of mana, along with what appeared to be small anti-personnel explosives.

"Gluttonous Bellok. You are hereby sentenced to immediate execution for illegally trading Class 1 prohibited items and violating the Association's security laws."

The man who appeared to be their leader delivered the sentence.

Bellok burst into loud laughter.

"Execution? Bwahahaha! Who the hell do you think you're executing? If you wanted to capture the great Bellok, you should have brought an entire army! And what have I done that's so terrible that I deserve to be executed? Huh?"

Bellok snorted and drew his enormous butcher's cleaver.

The imposing presence of an A-rank Hunter erupted from his body.

"I suppose I can take this as you picking a fight with me?"

Just then,

[Pewww!]

The snipers lying in ambush on every side simultaneously pulled their triggers.

But they had not fired ordinary bullets.

They had fired ampoules filled with highly concentrated mana suppression agents.

[Thud! Thud!]

The ampoules pierced Bellok's thick skin and lodged inside his body.

"Urgh...!"

In an instant, the mana flowing through his blood vessels stopped like a river blocked by a dam.

His strength began to drain away, and his vision grew blurry.

"Ugh... You... bastards...!"

Taking advantage of Bellok's unsteady movements, the Shadow Walkers charged at him like a pack of wolves.

Without his mana, Bellok was nothing more than an enormous lump of meat.

The assassins wrapped chains around his arms and legs to restrict his movements, then began cutting away his flesh piece by piece with their sharp daggers.

"KRAAAAAH!"

Bellok roared like a wounded beast and fought back.

He tore at their necks with his teeth and smashed their skulls with headbutts, struggling with everything he had.

Several Shadow Walkers lost their lives or suffered severe injuries from his desperate resistance.

Like the A-rank Hunter he was, Bellok fought fiercely with nothing but his raw physical strength.

But there were simply too many enemies.

Eventually, he reached his limit.

At last, Bellok collapsed.

Before killing him, the assassins confirmed that he had handed certain materials over to Hong Man-gi.

"Target secured. Transaction involving Flame Lizard's Tears confirmed."

Bellok muttered inwardly.

'So this was your real objective...'

At the final moment, the leader approached Bellok with an enormous spear.

"Team Leader Cha Mu-jin has a message for you. He hopes you enjoyed your meal."

[STAB!]

The spear pierced straight through Bellok's abdomen.

His internal organs ruptured, and the pain of his severed spine spread through his body.

Bellok collapsed, coughing up blood.

Cold rain poured down over his dying body.

The assassins did not even bother to retrieve his corpse.

They simply tossed it onto a pile of rubbish in the Shadow Market, like the discarded remains of a slaughtered animal, and disappeared.

They had left his body there so carelessly that it almost seemed as though they wanted someone to find it.

It was an utterly miserable and pitiful end for a man who had once been called the king of the back alleys.

After finishing his story, Bellok's soul looked at Hong Man-gi with empty eyes.

"That's how I died. Like something worth less than a dog. Me, the great Bellok."

His words were delivered in a dry voice, but unmistakable anger lay beneath them.

"...I'm sorry."

Hong Man-gi lowered his head.

He clenched his fists so tightly that his fingernails dug into his palms.

Bellok had died because of him.

Because Hong Man-gi had selfishly gone looking for those materials.

"Sorry? Heh, heh... I didn't come here to receive an apology."

Bellok shook his head.

His gaze moved toward the gaping hole in his abdomen.

"It hurt. When that spear pierced my stomach, the pain was absolutely terrible. But..."

His expression twisted.

It was not because of the pain.

"There was something even harder to endure."

He clutched his ruined abdomen with trembling hands.

"I was... hungry."

"...What?"

"Even at the moment I died, when my intestines were spilling out... I was hungry. So hungry that I thought I would go mad."

Bellok's eyes began to tremble.

He had spent his entire life eating.

Rare monsters, expensive dishes, and every imaginable delicacy.

He had indulged in every flavor the world had to offer, always stuffing himself until his stomach was about to burst.

His nickname, Gluttonous, had been both his pride and his identity.

But at the threshold of death, what he felt was not satisfaction.

It was an endless, empty void.

"I spent my whole life stuffing my face... So why was my stomach empty when I died? Why was I so desperately hungry?"

He scratched at the table.

"It turns out... what I was eating wasn't really food. It was nothing more than desire. I kept stuffing things into my mouth to show off my strength and to satisfy my sense of superiority from eating things other people couldn't."

His voice grew increasingly rough.

"Real hunger doesn't come from the stomach. It comes from here."

He struck his chest.

"It won't fill up. No matter how much I eat, it won't fill up! Even after dying and becoming a ghost, this damn hunger won't go away! The wind... The wind keeps blowing through this hole in my stomach... It's so cold, and I'm so hungry that I feel like I'm going to lose my mind!"

The aura rising from Bellok's body began changing from blue to a dark, reddish-black color.

It was the aura of an evil spirit, created by the mixture of his resentment and hunger.

The restaurant lights began flickering.

The glass windows started rattling.

"C-Chef...!"

Kang Jae-min cried out and grabbed Hong Man-gi's arm.

He could not see anything, but the murderous intent and pressure in the air were so intense that he could barely breathe.

Lee Yu-han also retreated to a corner of the kitchen in terror.

"Why has the atmosphere suddenly become like this...? Just what kind of monster is it for its presence to be this overwhelming...?"

"Give it to me..."

Bellok raised his head.

A red glow appeared in his previously unfocused eyes.

His appearance was now completely different from what it had been only moments earlier.

He opened his mouth.

His jaw stretched open in a grotesque manner, and black mist rose from deep within his torn throat.

"Give me something that can fill this hole in my stomach!"

He roared.

"I don't care whether it's a monster, a human, or anything else! I have to chew it up and swallow it! I have to chew it, crush it, and fill this damn hole!"

He was losing his reason.

His identity as a Hunter was disappearing, leaving behind only the instinct of gluttony as he transformed into a malevolent spirit.

His gaze shifted toward Kang Jae-min and Lee Yu-han.

"So fresh... Warm blood... Tender flesh..."

Bellok rose from his seat.

His enormous shadow spread across the restaurant.

"Urgh... I think something's approaching."

"Y-yes, you're right!"

Kang Jae-min took out his knuckles, and Lee Yu-han also prepared for battle.

But both men's legs had gone stiff from the terror of facing an enemy they could not see.

At that moment,

"Sit down."

A low voice, as cold and sharp as frost, rang out.

It was Hong Man-gi.

He had not moved an inch.

Still seated in his chair, he was staring directly at Bellok, who was on the verge of going berserk.

His expression carried nothing more than the firm determination of a restaurant owner about to deal with a disorderly drunk customer.

Bellok hesitated.

"...What?"

"I said sit down, sir."

Hong Man-gi slowly stood up.

A faint golden mana rose from his body.

It pushed back Bellok's dark red murderous aura, restoring the restaurant's atmosphere to its original state as though purifying the air.

"This is a restaurant. If you've come here to eat, sit down quietly and wait. I'll take your order."

Hong Man-gi stared straight into Bellok's red eyes without looking away.

"You said you were hungry, didn't you? I'll fill that hole for you."

He pointed toward the kitchen.

"Instead of thinking about tearing people apart and eating them, have a meal that I make for you. Isn't that what you truly wanted?"

Hong Man-gi's sharp words weakened Bellok's overwhelming presence.

For a brief moment, reason returned to his eyes, which had been gleaming with madness.

"...You?"

Bellok growled.

"You think you can satisfy this terrible hunger? You think you can fill a hole that couldn't be filled even by swallowing an entire A-rank monster?"

"Yes. I can fill it."

Hong Man-gi answered with complete confidence.

"Because everything you've eaten throughout your life was nothing more than animal feed. Now, I'll prepare a proper meal for you."

Hong Man-gi tightened the strings of his apron.

"Please wait. It'll be ready soon."

Without looking back, he headed toward the kitchen.

His figure radiated the dignified authority of a chef capable of bringing even an evil spirit to its knees.

Bellok stared blankly at his retreating back before slowly sinking into his chair again.

"...Fine. Let's see what you can do, little chef. Haa... How did I end up like this...?"

His rampage had stopped.

But it was only a temporary ceasefire.

Bellok's soul was no longer in anything resembling a normal state.

If Hong Man-gi's cooking failed to satisfy his soul, this restaurant would immediately become a predator's slaughterhouse.

As Hong Man-gi entered the kitchen, his eyes gleamed sharply.

'The most human flavor... Yes, that's what he needs.'

He opened the refrigerator.
