Chapter 18

Chapter 18

“CEO Jeong, we cannot discontinue WG Instant Rice.”

The employees turned toward Choi Inwoo in surprise.

“What?”

They were not the only ones shocked.

The person with the widest eyes was CEO Jeong Seonghan himself.

Perhaps he had been waiting for someone to say exactly those words.

Choi Inwoo immediately stood.

“I don't think we can discontinue WG Instant Rice like this.”

Even if someone supported the CEO's personal opinion...

Jeong Seonghan was still the person responsible for running WG Food.

He had to generate profit.

He could not blindly support Choi Inwoo just because they agreed.

There needed to be a proper reason.

Clear evidence.

“Why do you think that?”

The smile disappeared from CEO Jeong's face.

Choi Inwoo answered with complete confidence.

“The first thing I did while thinking about how to increase WG Instant Rice sales was study our competitors.”

CEO Jeong nodded.

“So you believe you understand the other companies' products?”

“Yes. I think I understand them well enough.”

The large meeting room was filled with WG Food employees, including the sales staff.

But at the center of the room...

There were only two people.

CEO Jeong Seonghan.

And Choi Inwoo.

Lee Sejun listened with an uninterested expression.

When he heard Choi Inwoo's confident tone, one corner of his mouth curled upward.

CEO Jeong raised an eyebrow.

“What did you find?”

“I tried to understand why the companies controlling the instant rice market sell so well... and why our product does not.”

Choi Inwoo plugged a USB drive into the laptop connected to the screen.

The display changed.

“These are the three companies currently leading Korea's instant rice market. OI Food, Uttuk Food, and Rohan Food.”

The employees gradually began paying attention.

They had probably expected Choi Inwoo to simply support CEO Jeong without evidence.

But he had prepared data.

Choi Inwoo pointed toward the screen.

“If you compare their prices to WG Instant Rice, there is a very clear difference.”

Manager Jang Woojin answered bluntly.

“Products from major corporations are obviously cheaper than products from a smaller company. That's exactly why they sell well.”

Choi Inwoo nodded.

“That's right. As this data shows, I concluded that WG Food cannot win through price competition.”

The employees murmured.

Everyone already knew that.

The expectation in their eyes weakened.

There was a reason they had failed to save WG Instant Rice despite trying for so long.

Choi Inwoo studied their expressions and moved to the next slide.

“There was only one major difference between our product and the instant rice from those three corporations.”

“A difference?”

“Yes.”

He looked directly at the screen.

“Country of origin.”

“What about the country of origin?”

Again, it was Manager Jang Woojin.

He frowned.

Before Choi Inwoo could answer, Lee Sejun raised his hand.

“Don't tell me you're suggesting that we compete just because the rice comes from different regions?”

His lips twisted mockingly.

He clearly wanted to reinforce Manager Jang's argument.

CEO Jeong raised his hand.

“Let's hear Assistant Manager Choi first.”

“...Yes.”

The room quieted again.

Choi Inwoo moved to the next slide.

“As everyone knows, WG Instant Rice is made using 100% domestic Korean rice.”

“That's right.”

“But the same is not true for OI Food, Uttuk Food, and Rohan Food.”

The employees immediately began murmuring.

None of them knew this.

“You mean they don't use domestic rice?”

“Huh? I don't remember anything else written on OI Food's package.”

“I thought they used Korean rice too.”

Questions came from all directions.

Choi Inwoo waited until the room settled.

Then he cleared his throat.

“Even people working in the same food industry, including us, generally believe those products use only domestic ingredients. I believed the same thing.”

He continued.

“Most of the rice itself is domestic. However, some of the ingredients used in certain products are sourced from Japan.”

“Really?”

“They use Japanese ingredients?”

Several employees immediately pulled out their phones to search.

Im Sanghyeon cautiously raised his hand.

“Um... There's nothing about Japanese ingredients printed on the OI Food or Uttuk Food packages.”

Choi Inwoo pointed toward the screen.

“That's correct. But according to the detailed product information on each company's official website, the situation is different.”

Everyone looked up again.

“In the case of OI Food and Uttuk Food, some of the components used in the products are sourced from Japan.”

CEO Jeong nodded slowly.

“What about Rohan Food?”

“Rohan Food does not use Japanese ingredients.”

He paused.

“However, its food container is manufactured in China.”

A wave of surprise moved through the room.

CEO Jeong rubbed his chin.

“So you're saying this one difference gives us competitiveness?”

“Yes.”

Choi Inwoo nodded.

“WG Food is the only one among the four companies using domestic products from the ingredients all the way to the packaging container.”

“That is our advantage.”

“Hmm...”

Then Lee Sejun suddenly raised his hand high.

“CEO.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“Yes, Assistant Manager Lee. Speak.”

“Like Assistant Manager Choi said, WG Instant Rice uses domestic materials.”

He looked toward Choi Inwoo.

“But I don't think that one point is enough to compete with the major companies.”

He continued.

“I also think discontinuing WG Instant Rice would be unfortunate. However, I don't believe simply advertising it as a domestic product gives us enough competitiveness.”

Manager Jang Woojin immediately supported him.

“That's right. We're holding a discontinuation meeting because WG Instant Rice isn't selling. Pushing the fact that it's domestically made isn't enough to solve that.”

Many employees nodded.

WG Instant Rice was losing money every month.

That was why they were discussing discontinuation in the first place.

Even if WG's product was completely domestic...

No one believed that alone was enough to beat the major brands.

Except Choi Inwoo.

Because only Choi Inwoo knew what was about to happen.

Only he knew that Korean consumers would soon become extremely sensitive to products connected to Japan and China.

There was no way anyone else could know.

Choi Inwoo spoke as though he had been waiting for their objection.

“Manager Jang and Assistant Manager Lee are correct about one thing.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The biggest difference between our product and the major-company products is that ours is completely domestic.”

Lee Sejun smiled slightly.

But Choi Inwoo continued without caring.

“However, I don't believe that is a small difference.”

He switched the screen.

The next slide showed the global popularity of Korean culture.

“K-POP, K-dramas, K-movies... Many things from Korea are becoming popular worldwide.”

“Recently, K-food has also begun receiving more attention.”

Choi Inwoo's voice was firm.

“Korea has many representative foods.”

He paused.

“But if I had to choose the most fundamental one, it would be rice.”

“And when it comes to instant rice, WG Instant Rice is the only product here without foreign-sourced materials.”

“I believe that gives us real competitive power.”

CEO Jeong made a thoughtful sound.

“So you believe we can win if we advertise that difference?”

Choi Inwoo knew public attention toward fully Korean-made products would soon explode.

But he could not tell them the truth.

Even if he did, no one would believe him.

“I'm certain we can.”

CEO Jeong hesitated.

Then he asked quietly.

“Can you take responsibility for that?”

It was a heavy question.

But Choi Inwoo did not hesitate.

He smiled.

“Yes. I'm confident.”

Click.

The meeting room lights came back on.

I squinted slightly.

CEO Jeong stood.

“Let's stop the discontinuation discussion here. Take a short break, then we'll begin the weekly meeting.”

“Yes!”

Everyone answered.

I bowed to CEO Jeong and returned toward my seat.

Before I sat down...

“Assistant Manager Choi.”

I turned.

Manager Kwon Seunghun was calling me.

“Yes, Manager.”

“Come with me for a moment.”

“Yes.”

I followed him out.

As I left the meeting room, I saw Lee Sejun.

He glanced at me and twisted his lips slightly.

He seemed amused that I had struggled so hard to save a dying product.

I looked back at him and smiled too.

Because I could already see who would be laughing in the end.

Manager Kwon and I went up to the rooftop.

After sitting through the meeting for so long, I stretched my stiff body.

Manager Kwon rolled his shoulders too.

Then he spoke.

“Assistant Manager Choi.”

“Yes, Manager.”

He hesitated.

“...Are you really okay with this?”

“What do you mean?”

“I told you before.”

His expression was full of concern.

“The phrase 'I'll take responsibility' can be very dangerous inside a company.”

I understood exactly what he meant.

He had always been the senior who guided and helped me.

And now...

The only employee preventing a failing product from being discontinued was me.

Worse, I had publicly said I would take responsibility for it.

Of course he was worried.

Instead, I asked him something.

“Manager Kwon, what happens if I stop WG Instant Rice from being discontinued... and the sales actually explode?”

He frowned.

“Inwoo, let's talk honestly.”

Manager Kwon checked to make sure no one else was on the rooftop.

Then he looked at me seriously.
