Chapter 10

Chapter 10. Great Disaster (1)

Jooheon took out the 'Pen from Shakespeare's Childhood' and wrote on the ground.

[Ilya Volkov used one of Solomon's Demon Artifacts, an Artifact capable of stopping time, and stopped time throughout the entire world except for the team members.]

This Artifact made whatever was written with it become reality.

The moment the sentence was engraved into the ground...

Ilya moved exactly as written.

“Furcas!”

The moment that name echoed...

Space split.

A man holding an ancient golden astronomical device emerged.

Furcas.

One of the seventy-two demons.

A being who governed astronomy, astrology, and time.

He stroked his long beard.

Then raised the celestial clock.

Planets.

Constellations.

Clockwork axes.

Everything rotated inside it.

“Do you wish to see a world where time no longer flows?”

Furcas muttered.

He grabbed the central axis of the clock.

Then...

Click.

Time stopped.

A pigeon's flapping wings froze in midair.

A screaming man stopped with his mouth open.

Pedestrians remained frozen in the middle of falling.

Everything...

Stopped.

Except one group.

Jooheon and his team.

[Time Stop activated.]

[The world has temporarily stopped.]

[Maximum Duration: 30 minutes.]

[Warning.]

[Once the duration expires, the global curse will forcibly resume.]

Jooheon exhaled in relief.

“This should buy us some time.”

Ilya nodded.

Then...

[Amazing!♥]

[You stopped the disaster in such an unusual way!]

“!”

That damn book hadn't stopped?

Rulebook laughed brightly.

[Did you really think an Artifact could stop the one responsible for delivering disasters?♥]

[Still, you successfully prevented catastrophe.]

[Bonus points will be awarded to this world!]

[But you won't be able to stop the next one!]

The pages of the book began flipping on their own.

A card appeared.

As though its appearance had already been predetermined.

A black pickaxe shattered into pieces.

[Congratulations, humans!]

[You became the supreme predators among primates merely because you learned how to use tools!]

[Vishvakarma's Curse.]

[The Lockdown of Tools begins♥]

“!”

A second tower erupted from the earth.

Unlike the red Tower of Babel...

This tower was covered entirely in blue.

Then...

“...$&$*%?”

The team shouted something.

Probably asking what the hell it was.

They found out immediately.

CRACK!

The first things to fracture were smartphones.

Then computers.

Tableware.

Weapons.

Everything humans had invented as tools...

“$#$&#!”

“$%($*%(!!!!”

It felt as though the entire world were being dragged back into the primitive age.

Rulebook laughed in delight.

[There are two reasons humans were able to evolve differently from beasts.]

[First, 'language.']

[Second, 'tools.']

[Now we're taking both away♥]

A status window appeared before Jooheon.

[Vishvakarma's Curse has activated.]

[Every tool, technology, machine, weapon, and Artifact created by humans will be disabled.]

[Destroyed civilization returns to its beginning.]

[Humans will no longer be able to use tools.]

[All 'tools' have stopped.]

[Artifacts bound to humans are being punished and can no longer be used.]

Jooheon frowned.

Vishvakarma.

A craftsman god from Indian mythology.

The god said to have created the tools used by the gods.

In other words...

The first creator of tools.

Which meant...

“This curse destroys everything humans created with their 'hands.'”

But...

[The curse is not powerful enough to suppress Majesty's authority.]

[Consumable Artifacts remain usable.]

Rulebook laughed.

[Will you be able to stop this curse too?♥]

[Can humans survive without tools?]

[Civilization will now be destroyed♥]

Jooheon grinned.

How do I break a curse on tools?

He picked up Shakespeare's Pen again.

Then wrote.

“A tool doesn't become a tool merely because it can be held in one's hand.”

His fingers moved through the air.

[Writing is an axe that reproduces thought.]

[A story is an awl that pierces through time.]

[A record is a blade that never dies.]

[Artifacts born from language, memory, and stories are exempt from this curse.]

At that instant...

Golden light exploded from the writing.

It was like a sealed heart had begun beating again.

Artifacts that had stopped began breathing once more.

Stories.

Traditions.

Legends.

They carried the Artifacts back to life.

A status window appeared.

[Vishvakarma's Curse remains active.]

[However, Artifacts born from stories and traditions are exempt.]

[Human-made tools cannot be used.]

[Artifacts born from memory remain usable.]

[These Artifacts were born from 'narrative,' not from 'hands.']

[Therefore, they cannot be destroyed.]

“$##&...!”

The team cheered.

“##&(#$(!!”

They were probably celebrating the fact that they could use Artifacts again.

Then...

“Captain!”

“!”

They could communicate?

Before Jooheon could figure out how...

Yoo Jaeha ran out from the building, drenched in sweat.

He was holding a tiny translation Artifact.

[Solomon's Earring That Hears the Voices of All Things
(S-Grade / Bound Artifact)]

A bronze earring.

Jaeha had quickly duplicated several copies.

He threw them to the team.

Everyone immediately put one on.

“How is it?”

“Good!”

“It works! We understand each other!”

“Oh! Finally!”

King Solomon was said to understand the languages of not only humans but beasts, birds, and even demons.

That legend had manifested as a translation Artifact.

At that moment...

The blue tower in the distance vibrated.

CRACK!

A deep fracture appeared across its surface.

Then...

“Ilya!”

Jooheon pointed.

“Burn it!”

Now that they could understand each other, Ilya quietly began chanting.

“...Answer me, seventy-two legions of Hell.”

Dark crimson flames appeared inside a magic circle.

“You who command flame.”

“You who breathe the black fires of Hell...”

Ilya's eyes flashed.

“Phlegathis!”

“The Forty-Eighth Demon Lord.”

“Rise from Hell's furnace and burn everything.”

A humanoid demon covered in hellfire appeared.

Its face was black and eyeless.

Flames poured from its entire body.

The demon swept one hand through the air.

Hellfire shot toward Rulebook.

FWOOSH!

The book coughed.

[C-Cough! Cough!]

Burnt pages scattered.

Rulebook staggered.

[A-Amazing.]

[You even escaped the second curse!]

Jooheon stared at the book.

Ilya's Demon Artifact is almost Divine Grade.

And that's all the damage it did?

Then Rulebook was even higher-ranked.

The book seemed to breathe out heated air.

[Fine.]

[I admit you're impressive.]

[But...]

Its smile widened.

[Can you escape the remaining two?]

“...What?”

Jooheon stopped breathing for a second.

“There are two more?”

Rulebook smiled ominously.

[This world will receive a total of 'four curses'♥]

[How many can this world's Majesty stop?♥]

[If you stop all four, this worldline will not collapse.]

“...Worldline collapse?”

The term sounded familiar.

Majesty Jaeha had casually said something earlier.

"I'm jealous this world is still intact. My world was destroyed by the gods."

Jooheon hadn't paid much attention to it at the time.

But Majesty Jaeha had spoken as if he'd experienced the exact same thing.

When Jooheon looked over...

Majesty Jaeha was already glaring at Rulebook with hatred.

Then...

[Just as Majesty said, memory is a tool and stories are Artifacts.]

[That is why Artifacts survived even when tools were sealed.]

[But does that mean insignificant creatures like you will still be able to use them?]

[No.]

[Because...]

[Third Curse.]

[Curse of the Nile - Record Lockdown has activated♥]

Papyrus sheets appeared in the sky.

They represented records from before ordinary written language.

The original forms of covenants and revelations.

Papyrus from the age of pyramids.

Then the papyrus began burning.

“...!”

Something horrifying happened.

Letters disappeared from the pages of every book in the world.

Maps faded white.

Even memories inside people's heads began disappearing.

“Who... made this Artifact?”

“...Wait.”

Someone stared blankly.

“What was my name again...?”

Knowledge was sealed.

Memory vanished.

History itself began to disappear.

Textbooks.

Documents.

War records.

Maps.

Books.

Every form of recorded information turned into blank white paper.

[Curse of the Nile is active.]

[Records are being erased.]

[Memories are being removed.]

[History is becoming powerless.]

[Records concerning the origins of Artifacts are being deleted.]

[Humans will no longer remember 'how to use' Artifacts.]

“!”

Jooheon realized the problem.

Artifacts were powers born from history, tradition, myths, and legends.

But what happened if people forgot their origins?

They became nothing more than bizarre objects whose functions no one understood.

Sure enough...

Golden towers began rising everywhere.

The team members stared blankly at the Artifacts in their hands.

One person tried putting one in their mouth.

Another smashed one against the ground.

Someone else tried roasting one over a flame.

“Are we... supposed to eat this?”

Their memories had been turned off.

Their knowledge erased.

All that remained were the physical corpses of forgotten myths.

Majesty Jaeha sighed.

“Only Majesties still remember how to use Artifacts now.”

His voice contained cynicism.

Exhaustion.

And faint resignation.

He seemed to assume that this was where Seo Jooheon would finally fail.

“The Supreme Gods of the Four Great Civilizations...”

He looked at Rulebook.

“They've been destroying worldlines through that 'Rulebook.'”

Jooheon looked at him.

“Supreme Gods of the Four Great Civilizations?”

“Right.”

Majesty Jaeha nodded.

“Babel.”

“Vishvakarma.”

“The Curse of the Nile.”

His expression darkened.

“These curses represent those gods' wills.”

“My worlds collapsed in exactly this order.”

“Humanity became stupid...”

He looked away.

“Then eventually destroyed itself.”

Rulebook floated in the air, laughing in delight.

[As expected, their design for humanity's extinction is perfect♥]

But Jooheon smiled.

It wasn't provocation.

It wasn't resignation.

It was the expression of someone who had finally understood the problem.

“...So that's what this is.”

He began organizing everything in his head.

First Disaster.

Tower of Babel.

Collapse of language.

That belonged to the sphere of Babylonian civilization.

Mesopotamian mythology.

The highest-ranking god behind that is probably someone like Enlil or Enki.

Second Disaster.

Vishvakarma's Curse.

Lockdown of Tools.

Indian mythology.

Vishvakarma was the craftsman who created the gods' tools.

Then Brahma or Vishnu is probably connected to it.

And now...

Third Curse.

Curse of the Nile.

Lockdown of Records.

Egyptian mythology.

Jooheon's lips rose.

“...You said 'Curse of the Nile,' right?”

Majesty Jaeha looked at him.

“Yeah. Why?”

“The Supreme God over there is Ra.”

Jooheon smiled.

“The sun god.”

“That's true, but...”

Majesty Jaeha suddenly froze.

“Wait.”

His eyes widened.

“Don't tell me you—!”

Jooheon quietly reached inside his clothes.

He pulled something out.

Isis's Poison Fang.

Dark blue poison flowed over its surface.

It was the crystallized wisdom of Isis.

The very scheme Isis had once used to drive the sun god Ra to the brink of death in order to discover his True Name.

Jooheon grinned.

“If I rip out the Sun God's True Name with this...”

He looked toward the golden tower.

“Then I'll rip the Curse of the Nile out by its roots too.”

Rulebook recoiled.

[That's cheating!]

Jooheon ignored it.

The fang transformed into a dagger.

He sprinted toward the golden tower.

[Stop!]

[What are you doing?!]

Rulebook screamed.

Jooheon shouted back.

“What do you think I'm doing, asshole?!”

STAB!

Isis's Poison Fang plunged deep into the center of the tower.

The symbols covering the tower violently shook.

Then...

CRASH!

The golden tower began breaking apart.

['Curse of the Nile' has been nullified.]

[Ra's True Name has been damaged.]

[Ra's power is dispersing.]

[Record Lockdown has been released.]

Letters that had disappeared from the world rained back down from the sky.

Forgotten names returned to ancient books.

The real Yoo Jaeha stared at the Artifact in his hand.

Then his face lit up.

“Right! That's how you use this thing!”

Majesty Jaeha quietly stared at Jooheon.

He looked shocked.

And strangely conflicted.

“...You really are...”

Jooheon turned toward him with a grin.

“What?”

His grin widened.

“Starting to fall for me?”

(To be continued.)
